(purportedly) Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), a conflict fought between the Republican government of the Second Spanish Republic and the Nationalist rebels. It was caused by a military coup against the left-leaning Popular Front government, which ultimately failed but plunged Spain into a brutal conflict between left-wing Republicans (including socialists, anarchists, and communists) and right-wing Nationalists (including fascists, monarchists, and conservatives). The war ended with a Nationalist victory led by General Francisco Franco, who established an autocracy that ruled Spain until his death in 1975. The Compañía Arrendataria de Tabacos (Tobacco Leasing Company) was a Spanish public company responsible for managing the state monopoly on the manufacture and sale of tobacco . It was established by law on April 22, 1887, at the behest of the Minister of Finance, Joaquín López Puigcerver. In 1945, it was succeeded by Tabacalera. 4 4
