JDoughty Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Smoked after a few weeks of rest from arrival. It is not often that a cigar really stumps me on specific tasting notes while at the same time being genuinely enjoyable. My impressions from the smoke were of smoothness, elegance, rich medium bodied balance. There was just a bare hint of dark, well rounded sweetness with a stout backbone. A touch of mineral, earth and ash in that backbone that reminded me of aged Nicaraguan tobacco. If pressed to identify any specific flavor I would have to say toasted sourdough with the faintest lashing of butter, slightly twangy in a way that recalls some of the earthier Cuban profiles. Mysterious but definitely tasty. Burned my fingers nubbing this one and trying to figure it out. 😆 3
JDoughty Posted November 5 Author Posted November 5 Woo hoo what a difference some time makes. During tonight's virtual herf, I smoked the other Sovereign Sun from my sampler that had been resting more than 30 days. Absolutely delicious. I didn't get much on the cold draw, but at first light, the flavors exploded. They were much more clearly defined than in the first sampling a few weeks ago. Have you ever roasted marshmallows over a campfire and gotten a warm mouthful of the crispy, crackling, toffee-sweet and just slightly burnt outside, and then the inside all gooey and delicious? That was the first puff. From there it got better. Notes of sweet raisin, milk chocolate, savory caramel and baking spice wrapped themselves smoothly around a comforting core of toasted wood and minerality. By the end of the first third, I was getting delightful flavors of caramelized banana and sweet spiced rum that reminded me of a Bananas Foster dessert. It tasted so good I wanted to eat the smoke. I was retrohaling as slowly as possible in an attempt to draw out and savor every last delicious nuance. About halfway down, some beautiful toasted sourdough notes and a remarkably Cubanesque twang started singing in harmony with all the other delectable flavors. The burn and draw was perfect, and the volume of smoke was rich, creamy and generous. Smoked it down to a finger burning nub. These are definitely on my list to re-order soon. 2
VivaLosFatman Posted Thursday at 01:22 PM Posted Thursday at 01:22 PM Bought a pack in July and agree 100% with your November notes. In fact rolled thru then so quick ordered more this month. Those though need rest, dry and unsmokeable ROTT. Hoping they come back.
