El Presidente Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 What is the true history of Cohiba? What steps are taken to make sure cuban soil isn't overworked? Meaning are there times you say the soil is beat lets let it skip a growing season? Do they scrape topsoil after a period and till new fresher soil? 1. . Cohiba began as a simple cigar rolled by Eduardo Ribera for a select few including Catro's body guard. Castro took to them like a fish to water and asked (commanded more likely) Ribera to make them exclusively for Castro. Ribera was set up in an Italian styled mansion in the Havana suburb of El Laguito. The name Cohiba commenced in 1968 and for the next 14 years produced Castro's favourites inthe Lancero, Corona Especial and Panetela. Each had a special pigtail and were made available ontly to Cuban Government officials and through them as diplomatic gifts. In 1982, these three cigars were offered for commercial sale outside of Government and diplomatic circles followed in 1989 by Espléndidos, Robustos and the Exquisitos. ("La Línea Clasica"). The 1492 Linea commenced in 1992 with the Siglo I, II, III, IV and V. 2. Will need to check if there is a set government controlled pattern to resting of plantations. I know that on Don Alejando's plantation he does rest different fields and uses both chemical and natural fertiliser to enhance the soil.
