Havana, June 7 (RHC) Cuba today intensifies preparations for the new tobacco campaign to which it will dedicate 22 thousand hectares with the commitment to deliver more than 25 thousand tons to the national industry.

Of that total, about 14 thousand hectares are located in the province of Pinar del Río, confirmed the president of the Tabacuba Business Group, Marino Murillo, who added that the resource guarantees demanded by the period are superior.

The country already has 50 percent of the fertilizers to use and a large part of the phytosanitary products. Others are yet to arrive after signing contracts with suppliers, he stated.

It will be a tense stage due to the conditions imposed by the international market for the acquisition of inputs and their transfer; however, the president of Tabacuba pointed out, we will have these resources and we will continue with the development program aimed at producers.

As a distinctive fact of the stage, he mentioned the remuneration in foreign currency to those who are dedicated to producing the so-called sol en palo tobacco and to the farmers who from the so-called second-class plains provide considerable levels of raw materials.

It is a claim that today can materialize due to the growth of exports, Murillo said.

During the 2023-2024 campaign, 14,300 hectares of tobacco were planted in Cuba. The planting commitment was fulfilled but the planned yield was not, although some companies stand out that exceeded 1.3 tons per hectare, he said.

Considered the largest producer of tobacco in the country, the western province of Pinar del Río accelerates the steps of the new campaign and the reconstruction of the natural cure houses for the leaf, almost completely destroyed by the passage of Hurricane Ian in September of 2022.
