Popular Post hrs1 Posted September 12, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 12, 2022 With fall rapidly approaching in New England, picture perfect summers days like today can be bittersweet. Looking backward, summer is basically done. Looking forward, fall is almost here. But, winter is right around the corner. To my mind, the best option is to seize the day and make the most of it. What is done is done. What will be will be. Enjoy the moment. It's Hoyo Review Weekend. I've got a new 50 cab of HdM DC inbound today. The Michigan game will be on at noon. Perfect time to head outside with the family before the game, catch some rays and check-in on a cab I picked up last winter. Carpe diem. Grab a cold brew. Crack the cab. I'm whacked with the sweet smell of cedar and caramel. This is one of the best smelling cabs I have. Maybe the best. I've sampled a few smokes this summer and they've all been great. Some thicker wrappers and slight under-filling made for wonky burns at times. But, the flavors have been exceptional. The flavor and body start out medium-light and ramp to medium plus/full. There's been cream, cedar, coffee, nuts, caramel, chocolate and bready notes in every smoke. The best example of the bunch had citrus, dried berry and cinnamon/sweet spice notes as well. To my palette, they've been rich and delicious 😋 Do a quick punch and notice a nice indent right under the center of the cap (total aside - I'm finding these on a few GOB rolled boxes from summer '21 .... Anyone else getting these?). Cold draw is bready with faint sweetness. Draw is great if a bit loose. Spark it up and it's off to a stunning start. Honied nuts are front center. Cream in the background. Coffee on the finish. Sweet cedar on the retro. The mix shifts a bit as the cigar progresses, but it's all variations on the same themes. Body and flavor are medium plus. Smoke output is opulent. Only knock is it looks like the burn will be an issue. But when a cigar is tasting this great, I don't really care. Halfway through the first third and it's settling into a sweet cream and cedar core. Ash drops and .... We're into the second third. Honied nuts and cream are back at the center and in near-perfect balance with each other. There's a nice tanginess on the finish. Swap out my coffee for OJ, amplifying a nice creamy citrus element in the mix. Flavor is rich Halfway through the cigar, some chocolate and caramel make an entrance. Some bread and sweet spice join the party. The cream is becoming marshmallowy. The finish is getting longer. Burn gets wonky and requires a touch up, but it doesn't disrupt this flavor freight train. Final third and the flavor party is coming to an end. Breadiness takes over and gets progressively toasty toward the nub. The sweet spices hang around the edges. But, everything else has checked out. Overall, a 2hr 94 point cigar. Without the wonky burn and relatively boring final third, this would have been 95+ points. Looking back, this was not the best example so far from this cab. But, it was definitely the second best. Looking forward, maybe it gets creamier? Maybe it gets less rich and loses some of the citrus and sweet spice? Regardless, it made for a thoroughly enjoyable late summer morning with the family. Carpe diem. Now for a Michigan victory and a new cab of HdM DC 12 1
