The aroma of the leaf captivates Caridad Forgoso Gil, who does not smoke, but her work fascinates her with the characteristic smell of the wrappers used for rolling tobacco, in the factory located on the corner of Maceo and Libertad streets, in the city of Ciego de Avila.

She feels so much love for the job of her life that she was assigned a key position. “I am a classifier of the raw material, I fulfill the daily norm and other chores because I also represent the workers as general secretary of the union section.”

Another of the consecrated ones is Idriana Torres: "I know almost everything about the cigar, I started in Moroccan in a select unit, I have also watered the postures, planted, de-stemmed, skewered and today I support the production of cigars in an artisanal way here", affirms the recently decorated accounting technician for hoarding more than 50 years in the tobacco sector.

Both are enthusiastic about the new achievements of the collective dedicated to the production of Breva, Crema and Petticetro, their classic vitolas.

 

The groove grows

Although the traditional mission consists of producing for national consumption, the employees of the tobacco shop named El Surco hope that their products also stand out in the international market.

Regarding the prospects, Rogelio Jiménez Llera, director of the Ciego de Ávila Twisted Tobacco Base Business Unit (UEB), reported: "We are currently carrying out a requalification course to implement production for export, which commits us to forming 100 tobacco rollers and to help our company complete the cycle, from work in the seedbeds to the marketing of tobacco abroad».

The great effort has as a guarantee for success the integral efficiency of the center at the closing of the economic balance of last April. "Production finished at 119%, net sales at 122%, productivity at 134%, we distributed profits in the first quarter and we have a full staff, something we have not achieved in recent years," argued Rogelio.

 

Beyond the hill 

Ciego de Ávila harvests one of the best leaves, among the provinces with a tobacco tradition in the country. There the crop emerged from the mountainous territory of Florencia and spread through vegas, cultivation houses, collection and benefit centers and other Avilanian municipalities.

One of these selection units for wrappers for export is located in the town of Venezuela, belonging to the Ceballos tobacco UEB, directed by Danay Contreras Sánchez.

 

The young director explained: "We have collected more than 30 tons and we are committed to fulfilling the plan for the current campaign because the country needs our contribution for the recovery of the economy and social projects."

Another young woman, Dayam Rodríguez Marichal, director of tobacco collection and benefit of the Florencia Agricultural Company, summed up the productive tribute for May 29, Tobacco Worker's Day and the 111th anniversary of the birth of Lázaro Peña González.

 

«From January to April -he exemplified- the finished production of national twisted products behaved at 108% and that of exports at 124%. To dedicate ourselves to the latter we have in the current course the preparation of 23 torcedores, some in the UEB of the provincial capital and others in the direction of our company, in accordance with the purposes of the 63 measures implemented to boost Cuban agriculture.
