Are some cigars region specific and only made available to certain distributors in certain parts of the world?

For example, certain cigars regularly available in the HK/Australian market are never seen at vendors in Europe, and certain cigars found from vendors in Spain never appear at vendors in HK/Australia, etc.

Is this just the result of the ordering habits or preferences by large regional distributors or does Habanos have maket specific products based on popularity in certain regions?

We need to diffentiate between regional releases and regional ordering habits.

Each Regional distibutor can now submit one cigar per annum for a "special regional release". They have the right to that cigar exclusively for 3 years after which the right transfers to Habanos s.a

We have seen last year regional releases in Switzerland, UK and Italy and this year there will be a host more. The only stipulation is that the regional relaease can not be from one of the 5 major Marques: Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo or Julieta, Hoyo De Monterrey of H. Upmann.

Seperately, different distributors have different buying habits. For example, Ramon Allones small Club Coronas are not brought into the Asia Pacific by PCC (Although we have made an order which they will supply when available again in Havana). It all comes down to what they believe will sell. Each distributor has a stick and dollar budget which is part of their Habanos s.a License agreement. How they make it is up to them.

Each market has its own idiosyncrasies. Smaller guage cigars in parts of Europe, larger in UK and HK etc.

Hard to believe they did not consult you Mel :lol2:

Regional releases this year run the risk of becoming a keystone cops farce. Every distributor has their hands up and their cigars selected. Not one cigar has been signed off for 2006 by Havana as far as I know.

It could be a classic showdown ie "Marketing Genius" Vs "Production Ineptitude"

Thanks for your thoughts on this - good question too!

Sad to say, but in my experience ineptitude trumps genius handily when push comes to shove.

Fortunately I have plenty of regular production stuff yet to sample.
