Trinidad Coloniales  (SSSTRW)

BMP ABR 16

This is my first Coloniales. I am a big fan of the Reyes, being one of my regular shorter smokes, and have heard good things about these, so when I was last in my local cigar shop I was pleased to find an open box of 2016 Coloniales that had nice smooth wrappers, so I purchased 2 of them.

They have been resting at 62RH for 6 weeks.

Construction: seems well packed.

Aroma at cold: Chocolate & sweet tobacco

Dry draw: Sweet hay and tobacco, draw has some resistance

First third

Earthy, vegetal start, some spice. I'm making this full bodied from the off. Draw tightened up even more after the first half inch. I chopped a bit more off and draw improved but it was still hard work for the nearly the whole cigar except the last third. The vegetal/earthy aspect is getting dominated by black pepper which is the dominant flavour along with hay.

Second third

Pepper is now intense, overwhelming everything else sometimes it is more cayenne pepper, other times black pepper. This certainly has punch and power, with a moderate nicotine hit too.

Last third

Black pepper goes, leaving some cayenne pepper, though there is a little sweetness trying to come out. Thankfully the cayenne fades and a creamy consistency builds a bit. There is also hints of coffee, with hay. This is ok now. Creamier with each puff, as the pepper fades- more like a Reyes at this point which stays to the end.

Conclusion: Oh I was hoping for something more to my taste! I do like a bit of pepper, but in this cigar it drowned out everything else in the second third. The last third was ok. I'll only give this a 6.5/10, docked half a point for the draw.

I am not inclined to get any more after this, especially as I'm quite happy with the Reyes.
