MrGlass Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Partagas is a brand I often overlook. If I'm after a robusto, I tend more towards the Epicure No. 2. If I'm looking at a pyramid, I'd prefer the Unicos. It's not that I particularly dislike them, I just have other brands I favour more in the various sizes. The only exception to this would be the 8-9-8, which I was very disappointed with initially but came to love after about 4 years only to never be able to replace them. I have absolutely no idea where this D4 I'm reviewing came from, so I'm clueless about the box code or even the year. It has been in my humidor for a while, but when or how I acquired it is a mystery to me. The wrapper is very light with a number of veins and seems thin. The draw is good although I would prefer a touch more resistance. The aroma at cold was sweet with a hint of pepper. Opening Third: The cigar opened with pepper but isn't overbearingly spicy. About halfway through this third, this developed into burnt sugar, however by the end it had turned back to straight pepper. I've been joined by Zaia at this point, who decided she was going to be my smoking buddy for the morning. Middle Third: Visitors arrived at this point and the cigar went out while I said hello. After relighting the pepper resumed but with some subtle paprika in the background. The wrapper was starting to lift near the ember, but this ultimately sorted itself out. The paprika was soon replaced with a bitter undertone. Final Third: The pepper has begun to lighten. It's still the predominant flavour, but it has dampened and the sweet undertones from the beginning have returned. At this point, the cigar begins to have some serious burn issues, and multiple touch-ups are required through to the end to keep it lit or address tunnelling. Throughout this third, the pepper continues to fade and the smoke turned into a creamy milk chocolate. The total smoke time was 1:45. Overall I really enjoyed this cigar, which was only marred by the burn issues in the final third. I might have to reconsider my stance on these and consider sending some to the OLH. 1

Texwrangler Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 happen chance, I too enjoyed a Party D4 yesterday and could not agree more with your description. About the only thing I found different was the middle 3rd of mine had a sweet caramel mixed in with a white pepper taste. overall a very enjoyable smoke.
