schubb Posted November 6, 2016 Posted November 6, 2016 I’m hoping for good things from this Saint Luis Rey Churchill. I enjoy SLR, and it’s an absolutely beautiful night for the start of November. This cigar came to me from the Christmas sampler last year. Good looking construction, perfect draw, so let’s get started. Start 5:22pm 1st third: Starts off light with some creaminess and honey and a touch of nuttiness. Very mild to start, but incredibly pleasant. Construction is absolutely perfect. It’s always great to have a cigar with immaculate construction, because I can relax so much more when I’m not worrying about the burn or the draw. 2nd third: A bit of something is creeping into the profile, mixing well with the cream, honey, and nuts. I can’t quite place the flavor, but I’m going to call it licorice because that’s the closest comparison that I can think of. It’s somewhat similar to the SLR Lonsdale from the same sampler, though no floral notes right now that I got from the Lonsdale. Body is slowly picking up from mild to maybe mild-medium. Final third: And there’s the floral note I was looking for. Bit of coffee joins in as well towards the end, but the honey, cream and nuts continue through. It’s wonderfully complex and actually coming close to medium bodied surprisingly. The final third is making me think that this still has some left in it, though it is just about perfect now. I almost burned my fingers before I finally put it down. End 7:53pm I really enjoyed this cigar, and I’m glad I got a chance to smoke one. I would love to have a box if they were still produced, however I’ve seen the price on the 24:24 for a box now and it is out of my budget. Great cigar, shame it was discontinued. SLR continues to be a winning marca for me. If only they made a petit corona still… 3
Fugu Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 Excellent review of an excellent cigar. Smoking from my last cab, very slowly (and very sadly). Well, you simply cannot go deep every time a beloved cigar is discontinued, unfortunately. I get what you mean by 'licorice', and agree very similar genes to the Lonsdale. Love 'em.
