SloppyJ Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Sorry, no pictures as I didn't expect to be posting anything about it. I'm fairly new into the CC game and don't have the taste for some of the smaller subtleties that are present which is why I never post any cigar reviews. But here we go. Coming into this cigar, I have only had one other Hoyo which were a box of '14 Epi2s. Boy was I in for a change. These Du Princes came in yesterday from a 24:24 deal. I had to try one ROTT. I dry boxed one stick for about 5 hours between delivery and dinner and the rest went into the humi. After dinner I had one thing on my mind, and that was to light that puppy up. The aroma coming out of the box was breath taking. You could tell they were fresh and they didn't care. Construction had a rustic feel which I enjoy. Cold draw was nothing complex, just straight tobacco. Could have been more on the cold draw but I had just finished up some BBQ and my mouth was still fighting that off. Upon initial light, holy mother of spice, this thing has a kick! Hands down the spiciest CC I've ever tasted. It was there and it stayed there the entire time. There were some strong toasted tobacco flavors intertwined between the spiciness as well as a very subtle touch of cream about 1/3 of the way through. Just enough to break it up and keep me guessing. I was only able to finish 2/3 of the cigar but it remained pretty constant to my tastes the entire way. As it progressed, the cigar got darker and more earthy. Admittedly, I was burning through it pretty quick because I had other obligations I needed to take care of. Going to lay them down for 30 days and try again. Not that this was a bad cigar at all but it was 100% different than I expected based off of the epi 2's I've had. It was a very intriguing cigar and packs quite a bit of kick in a small package. Just how I like it! Thanks for reading. 4
Hurltim Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I have one on the way to try. (VERY excited to try one.) Thanks for the great review! EDIT: Oops! I don't have a Du Prince coming. Now I get to add one! I love this place 1
Phinz Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Hmmm, posting a review from one sample, of which you only smoked 2/3? Time to come clean.... You are a staff writer at Cigar Afficianado, right? JK... I've got a box of Du Prince Nov 15 in my stash, and my results have been similar. After my first sample I opted to give them a good long rest to let the spice calm down a bit. I'll be sampling them every 6 months or so. Enjoy the slippery slope of CC addiction!
SloppyJ Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 So yours are about a year old. Do they calm down with age? Currently sampling my first ever PLMC right now. It's perfect for a light after dinner smoke. Such delicate flavors. I might be in love. Never thought I would say that about a mild cigar with my history of heavy hitting NCs. It's fun to evolve. Just received mine back in July, so I've only had the one (after about a month of rest) from this box, but all reviews I've seen say they settle into a creamier profile with some age. This is my first box of the Du Prince, so I can only report from what I've heard from others. However, I did just sample an Epi 1 from an Oct 14 box tonight, and those are certainly coming along well!
