Popular Post schubb Posted April 16, 2016 Popular Post Posted April 16, 2016 As soon I as saw this weekend contest, the H. Upmann Magnum 50 popped into my head. This cigar has been absolutely outstanding for me recently and is my favorite cigar right now. I like Upmann, I like Saint Luis Rey, and the Magnum 50 is giving me the best of both of those right now, almost a cross between a Regio and Upmann #2 for me. I picked up a 10 count box from a 24:24, and I wish I had gotten a 25 count box because I’m going through these way too quick. It was my top cigar in March, and looking like it will be my top cigar of April as well. Prelight: Wrapper has a nice, oily sheen to it and great aroma. Clipping the cap reveals a divot, but a very loose draw at cold which is a little worrying, no resistance to speak of. No wind at all right now, and sitting at a comfortable 58 degrees in the shade. Start: 11:11am 1st third: Starts out immediately with thick, dense clouds of smoke. Draw on this is an open as I feared, no resistance still. The start of the Magnum 50s I’ve had made me think of Saint Luis Rey. The last Mag 50 I had reminded me of an SLR Regio in the first third, with an intense fruity flavor. This one is starting off more like the one SLR DC I’ve had the pleasure of trying. It has a lighter fruitiness than the Regio with a bit of a floral taste as well. It’s somewhat different than I was expecting to start but not unpleasant. There’s also a bit of cream and coffee to it, as well as a bit of a bread flavor. Dropping the ash towards the end of this first third reveals some of the issues with the very open draw and a decrease in smoke production: a nice big empty spot right in the middle, which is disappointing. Others from this box have had perfect construction, so of course I grab the one with issues for a review. Runs deep from the looks of it. Oh well. Just a bit under medium body. 2nd third: Getting into the middle third, the draw is starting to get a little tighter, not as much as I’d like but it’s not like a straw anymore. Smoke production is back up, and flavors are crisp again. Fruit (more like a Regio now), coffee, cream, bread, and a bit of nuts are coming in now. Now that the construction issues seem to be past, the Magnum 50 is reminding me why I’ve been loving these so much recently. Final third: Fruit is gone in the final third, leaving a creamy coffee, nutty, and bready profile. Bit of woodiness coming in towards the end. Starting to show how young it is in the last inch or so, but I’m still enjoying it and not going to put it down until I can’t hold it anymore. End: 12:50pm Smoked quicker than usual thanks to the problems in the beginning, but even the construction issues in the first half can’t get me down on the Magnum 50. I just love this cigar, the flavor profile is perfect for me. These are going to be a staple in my rotation for as long as they are good like this. Great cigar on a great day. 6
planetary Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 Excellent review with terrific pictures. I've not dipped into my box of Mag 50s yet, but this is inspiring me to go to the humidor, pull the box forward, and to take a core sample. 1
