So I called the trash/waste removal company today to pay my bill and asked the lady if I could set up them emailing me the bill, or just do an autopay. She somewhat tersely informed me this option isn't available at this time or for the foreseeable future. I was a little mad and kind of taken aback by thier lack of technology until I gave it a little more thought.....

That's messed up Zeedubbya, I work for a trash/waste removal company albeit I work in the rolloff division, I do take payments for the residential side. With our system you can be set up on auto pay, and we can most certainly email you a receipt/confirmation code that it was paid......sorry your trash company is behind the times.

I really just thought it was ironic that my trash company would want to reduce paper. Seems like it could hurt their business--the slippery slope so to speak. I don't believe it was the woman's intention to come off thataway, but it gave me a chuckle. It's just a minor annoyance.

You could check with your bank to see if you can do a "bill pay" - not autopay where the bill amount is drawn automatically, but where you set them up as a payee via your bank and pay electronically each month. Your bank might actually send them a check, but it's still "paperless" for you.

I get what you're saying, I work in local government and one of our income streams is a franchise fee from our waste hauler, which is based on tonnage delivered (it's basically used to pay for environmental cleanup, pilot projects in partnership with the waste hauler and the eventual closing costs of the landfill). However, because we and the cities around have done such a great job advocating recycling that the tonnage of garbage continues to decline. Plus there is no fee on recycling so that they in turn offer it free to our residents. "Yay, we're recycling more and throwing away less....but now we have less money to pay for recycling programs..."
