elam370 Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Unfortunately I did not take a single picture due to me smoking this as I was watching a movie with a friend. The Bolivar Petite Corona. A rather interesting stick, primarily because it packs a huge punch. This box was a HQ box that I got from FoH. And well, it was surprising. Especially in light of the absolutely excellent San Cristobal El Principe I had right before. On with the review! This Boli was rather odd, fantastic looking wrapper, dark-ish, spotted with oil, it looked absolutely excellent. It was however a bit soft, meaning I'll have dry box it next time. On the pre-draw there was hints of coffee, and interesting a little floral/fruit taste. An interesting taste. But then again, not too unexpected from the Bolivar profile. At this point I'm listening to some absolutely excellent music; the Funk Brothers, beautiful, rich, warm. And so was the cigar. Right off the bat large billows of smoke flow out of the stick. The first draw fills my mouth with punch. Rich flavors of creamy coffee, milk almost. It's quite the stick. And I know I'll be in for a very satisfying smoke. I slow down, letting Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" play in the background, relaxing me as I settle in my slightly comfy chair and enjoy the flavors. Unfortunately, this stick seemed to have that misfortune of being constructed rather poorly. It was canoeing quite badly. But nothing a lighter can't fix! A couple more draws and 20 minutes later I've burned through 1/3. So far, that excellent coffee taste remains, I'm greeted with a welcome and expected pepper. What strikes me as fascinating though is the very very obvious lack of harshness for a very young stick, after all I've only had the box for 3-4 weeks by now. Excellent. By the 2nd third I'm picking up hints of orange peel surrounded by the delicious milky coffee that's been present. The pepper has died away, something I don't mind at all in my sticks. Smoke production is fantastic, billows upon billows of smoke come out of the cigar, filling the air with the delicious aroma of hay. This has been quite the smoke, at this point I could throw it out and be 100% satisfied. But of course I continue. The construction seems to have fixed itself and the ash is still mysteriously dark, but that is no issue. Onto the final third, This is where the cigar becomes bread-like. The coffee subsides into the background, I get some orange peel but the prominent note is by far a bread/nut note. The finish I was expecting. By now, the construction problems have faded away. My cigar is almost done and I'm listening to "Heard it Through the Grapevine." Quite the wonderful evening with what basically is a blind Petite Corona purchase. Overall, I've found that these Petite Coronas would be even better with a couple months as the last third ended up being still a tad rough. But I might have sped up smoking. As of right now I am comfortable sitting here listening to more Motown and enjoying the punch that this cigar has given me. Would I have another one? Definitely, but I think I'll have to let it rest a bit more before I have another one. A fantastic stick and a I must say HQ boxes are quite enjoyable and I very much enjoyed this Bolivar Petite Corona. I'll still say my go to cigars are more Partagas, but this was definitely a welcome change. If not for the construction issues I'd give it a higher score. But who cares about scoring? It's a stick I enjoyed, that's all that matters. 1
Grahamsant Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Nice review, thanks for sharing! Bolivar were one of my first CCs so I've got quite the soft spot for them! I was lucky enough to get a PSP box of BPC from FOH and they are spectacular! Mine were probably a little soft as well but that is down to problems with my humidification at the moment.
sheppsea Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 Nice review Bolivar is one of my favourite brands but the PC was the one I have liked the least (not to say it was bad, but I just preferred the BBF and RC)
elam370 Posted July 8, 2014 Author Posted July 8, 2014 Nice review Bolivar is one of my favourite brands but the PC was the one I have liked the least (not to say it was bad, but I just preferred the BBF and RC) Surprisingly I've found that the RC is a bit easier on the Palate than the PC. And these PCs are still young so I'll have to give them a couple more months before I try some more. I will say that the BBF especially after 2-3 years are absolutely phenomenal sticks.
camachoman Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Very nice review of one of my all-time favorite smokes! Thanks for sharing!
TiminBC Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Nice review; however, I would not recommend them to anyone (There all mine!!!!!)
