Singapore shouldn't be compared to Malaysia. It is much easier for a government to manage an area of 700sqm compared to the 320,000sqm of Malaysia.

DM, just out of interest, am I correct in assuming you are of Chinese decent?

We will find out shortly whether the majority of Malaysia agrees with my views or DM's views!

Agreed that this topic is likely to get messy so I am out.

Fuzz, I agree with you wholeheartedly but the political infrastructure is not ready for such. The Malaysian constitution had inscribed the privileges of the Bumiputera I may not agree with it but its there and its the basis of Malaysia. The educated and urban may find the 2 party system as viable moving forward but the less educated and rural only knows politic by the racial line. How do we move from how we are now to that?

That's pretty much the issue, It's in the Federal Constitution (well, it was added to the constitution after the race riots). The constitution was never meant to divide the nation, but everyone together under the one country. Article 153 was meant to be an interim solution.

All parties need to agree to do away with racial policies and introduce means tested financial assistance for the poor. Once the rural populace can see tangible results from direct assistance (both educational and financial), they will chuck Article 153 out the door. Real, tangible results will always win over some nebulous, pie in the sky policy that will supposedly help you just because you identify as Bumiputra.

If you look at the Indonesian rich list is dominated by ethnic Chinese and same with Thailand. But the Sukarno regime made it compulsory assimilation to the local culture, adopting local names and language. In Malaysia the different ethnics were allowed to keep their culture, language and so forth thus the social contract and the privileges of the Bumiputera.

And from time to time Chinese people in Indonesia are subjected to random attacks by racist mobs. If you're asking whether I think Indonesia should be a model for how races deal with one another, I do not. Are you saying that except for the NEP, the Chinese in Malaysia would have faced the same as the Chinese in Indonesia? I grant that it's possible, and I would also point out that I haven't said that all these laws (including ISA) weren't necessary in 1969. But do you think that whatever good may have come of them is still applicable?

No, I'm orang puteh. I respect your views, Andy, and I hope that my disagreement didn't come across as disrespectful. Perhaps as a foreigner I shouldn't be expressing my opinions, but the important thing for me is to know how Malaysians feel; that's why I started the thread. I know it's a sensitive topic, and I hope I haven't offended anyone. I wish I could give all you guys a cigar and listen to you talk for a few hours.

I was just giving an example of other countries that was in similar situation without NEP and be problems that they faced.

Maybe as per what fuzz mentioned the bone of contention to the urban educated middle class, was discrimination of the NEP within the racial line. All of this is moot point anyway, the ruling party won albeit a lesser of a majority.

Now to your question whether all of this is relevant, NEP is still relevant but the mechanism has gotta be done differently now well that's my point of view. ISA another fav topic, well the US got guitmo bay, what's the difference?

I agree with andy, this can get messy but I think you are genuine in wanting to know how Malaysians really feel. Andy may feel I'm a pro Pakistan rakyat but I'm not, I'm a Barisan and umno but I'm a leftist umno. I feel Malaysian are just immature politics I think there should more debate, more constructive ideas to make this country better not his incessant politicking all the time. It's just bloody tiring!!

Is that supposed to somehow be a defense of the ISA? That another country does something equally indefensible?

In all seriousness though, thanks to you ZinZan and everyone else as well for sharing your opinions.

Malaysians rather get riled up about other things, like whether you should be allowed to bring durian on public transport or not...

Mmmm...haven't had good durian in a while...

You gotta try the mustang king, that's a durian that is out of this world.

The last time I had durian, D24 was all the rage. That is how long ago since I had some.

Yes, I heard of the Musang King, must make a point to have some when I am in the country.
