pedromendes Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 I have read all of José Latour's books, and this may be his very best. As a brief primer: José joined the Revolution in 1958 as a teenager. He eventually worked in the government, even under Che for a while. He became disillusioned in the 80s/90s, started writing, was blacklisted and eventually defected in 2004, moving to Canada a couple of years later. This book - essentially a thriller about a huge cocaine deal gone awry on a US navy submarine - includes Latour's classic use of suspense and tension. But the structure of the book, moving back and forth through time and space puts it a step above his other work. He also manages to tell real, powerful and moving stories about his characters - especially the Cuban ones. I was so deeply connected and invested in them all that the climax moved me to tears. Highly recommended. Even includes Fidel! nb: only available as an ebook http://www.kobobooks...L2R56S0Y0BA&r=1
