I had the pleasure to greet our new Toronto member Rob (Robo) in my backyard yesterday evening. Rob brought me a Trinidad Coloniale from 2008 while I offered him a JL Seleccion no. 2 from 2010. Rob did also provide the wine, a Fontalpino Chianti Classico from 2009. Both wine and cigars went perfectly well with each other, while the conversation was really entertaining. There was still a bit of wine for our second cigar of the evening and we both had one of my Bolivar Coronas Extra from 2009. Unfortunately, when we were reaching the end of the first third of our smokes, the wine died on us. Knowing that Rob liked Single Malts, I decided to open a bottle of Ardbeg 10 years old, which was the only Scotch I had available at home. I was a bit worried though because I've never considered peaty malts as a good option with cigars. I was proved wrong as the herbal notes of both products married very well indeed. Once our cigars finished and since it was already past midnight, Rob went back to his home and family. However, there was still a drop or two of Ardbeg in my glass, what to do? I don't know about you but as far as I'm concerned I may sometimes have difficulty staying awake between 10pm and midnight, but once the new day arrives, I tend to experience what we call in French 'the second breath' (le second souffle) which means that I was again fully awake and ready for a third cigar. I chose a Sancho Panza Non Plus which I received as part of the last Canadian Box Pass. The vintage is unknown to me but I would be extremely grateful if the person who put it in the box could provide this information. SP Non Plus have always been put by me in the category of 'Cheap & Cheerful' cigars; nothing less, nothing more. However, this time, while sipping the leftover of my glass of Ardbeg, I had the pleasure to discover a perfect pairing between drink and cigar. It was the nuttiness of both products in this case which produced wonders in my palate!

Try it, you may like it!

Best,

Michel

Bumped because I'd like to have information about the SP Non Plus I had that night.

Sounds like a great evening Michel.

It was indeed! Rob is going to be a great addition to the Toronto FOH family.

I'm not sure it will go well with cigars with good chocolate/coffee flavours, but with those with herbal/grassy or earthy notes, it seems to do the trick. More experiments will follow!

Best,

Michel

Thanks for the pairing notes. I like a peaty scotch but have never paired it with a cigar. I will have to try it soon.

Thanks Michel for being such a gracious host. It was a great evening for smoking cigars. :2thumbs:

It was my first JLS2 after wanting to try it for so long, and it did not disappoint. Hard to explain all the flavours however easy to understand how unique this cigar is: unlike anything else I've ever tried before. I might have to pick up a box.

I like to drink Chianti with cigars; it's a pairing, IMO, that goes very well. I recommend people try it.

The Bolivar was exquisite; really nice smoke and went really well with the tasty Ardbeg. Too bad habanos decided to discontinue the Coronas Extras as I really enjoy 44 ring size cigars.
