cottierm Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 After a couple of weeks spent exclusively on smoking all available petit coronas in preparation for the blind tasting, I decided to take a break and, since I had a bit more time at hand today, I smoked a LGC Medaille d'Or no. 2 out of a box of 2008. Many years ago I used to love that brand and particularly their churchills, it was therefore not without trepidation that I put light to this cigar. Luckily, it seems that this particular vitola is still as good as it was 10-12 years ago. Perfect construction and draw, slightly under-medium body, woody and grassy flavours with a regular increase of white pepper in the mouth as the smoking goes one. This is like a great tea when you are tired of cocoa-coffee profiles. Extremely relaxing and satisfying in taste and, in addition, such an elegant cigar to hold in hand. And now a question for the cognoscenti: as I have never had the chance to try a Tainos, how does it compare with the no. 2? Best, Michel
Colt45 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Thanks for the notes - I like them enough that I have two boxes in storage
cottierm Posted March 15, 2012 Author Posted March 15, 2012 A very thoughtful idea! Happy smokes. Best, Michel
rfenst Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 And now a question for the cognoscenti: as I have never had the chance to try a Tainos, how does it compare with the no. 2? Doesn't sound like the same cigar at all. Tainos is toasted tobacco, woody, fruity/floral/slightly slight. The ones I have smoked are from '10 and '11 and just need more time to mellow. Good luck finding any Tainos for a reasonable price as they weren't easy to get and then were discontinued last year- along with No. 2., both of which private sellers are asking an arm and a leg for. Now, here's my question: Why are Nos. 1, 3 and 4 so damn hard to find over the last 6-9 months?

Just in higher demand now, so the pricing has shot up by about 1/3. And, the No. 2's are in higher demand because the Nos. 1, 3, and 4's are all discontinued actually. That's why they're so hard to find now - those were discontinued, not the No. 2's.

tmac77 Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 I love the LGC line and would put the tainos at the top of my list for this Marca followed very closely (if not tied) with the medaille d'Or No.1. I am these days stocking up on the Md'O #2's as I fear that they will be long gone in the not too distant future
aavkk Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I was shocked that the 02's were around as long as they were, just amazing cigars at crazy low prices. Cant have enough of the whole line.
Hohenthal Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I'm not aware that the medaille d'Or No.4 were discontinued. They are not - for an odd reason, all the new stock of No. 2 went into the asian pacific, but none came to Europe (where people speculate about their deletion) - with the No. 4 it is exactly the reverse situation. Actually both vitolas are still on, but with dramatically narrow supply.
CanuckSARTech Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I'm not aware that the medaille d'Or No.4 were discontinued. Sorry, yes, my bad. I was thinking in the 10-boxes for the No. 4's. That's how I buy them - 25's for the 2's, and then 10's for the 4's, and those are what's discontinued (the 10-er packaging for the 4's, but not the 4's completely). Correct? I made a bad blanket statement on that one I think. Sorry for the heart palpitations anyone....
BatFastard Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Thanks for sharing your review. I'm down to my last few singles, but was overjoyed at picking up a box of these recently on a LFTH. Cheers, Jay
