Hemsworth Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I sauntered into my B&M today determined to try out a Mag 46 but he didn't have any in stock. So I poked around his H. Upmann selection and came out with a Corona Junior. Got home, poured a nice homebrewed Nut Brown Ale and lit her up. Well it showed me all kinds of good stuff. (that's about the limits of my tasting expertize right there). No really though, it started out peppery and delicious...eased into a slightly sweet nutty? flavor, also delicious...burst into a delicious hot cayenne sort of pepperyness...then mellowed into what I can only imagine is that delicious leather taste that I keep hearing about. All in all...delicious. The burn was even and consistant throughout, never needed a relight and only got bitter and mildly unpleasent in the last inch and a half or so. Upon reading reviews of this tasty little number it seems that this is a rather subdued example of the Upmanns. Now I am very excited about that Mag 46. So perhaps these Cubans aren't so overated after all. Now if only I could stop chipping away at my cigar budget $20 at a time and buy a friggin' box already!
Colt45 Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I'm glad you had an enjoyable experience. As you might expect, the Cuban cigar experience can be quite a journey - in the end, they may just not be your cup of tea. But have you always enjoyed every cigar you've ever had, or did it take some time to figure out what you liked and disliked - brands, sizes, flavor, body, strength, etc? Obviously, there are many variables and personal tastes, and you would not be the first member to wonder what all the fuss is about. All I can suggest is to have an open mind and be willing to give it a little time. The members here are always willing to help with any questions.
Hemsworth Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 To be honest, with a couple of exceptions, I have enjoyed almost every cigar that I have ever smoked. From HdM's Double Corona to the 25 cent corner store Century Sam's I used to smoke 25 years ago. I just love smoking cigars. I have had a fair amount of Cubans over the years as well as NC's, however I have only just recently begun to really pay attention to what a good cigar can be. So the first cigar to actually move me was a Padron 2000 Maduro followed by a couple of other NC's. I am now starting to appreciate my smokes on a much deeper level and this Upmann was the first CC to really make an impression. Considering how my tastes in beer and scotch are all over the map, I have no doubt that I will enjoy cigars of all shapes, sizes, flavors and strength. In the end I am having a great time exploring them all!

Hemsworth Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 I guess I'm a little confused over what you mean by overrated. I guess when I say overrated I mean that the majority of people that I talk cigars with seem to brush off NC's as completely inferior product and would smoke nothing but Cubans. For the most part I hadn't been so affected by the Cubans as to feel the same way. This particular Upmann seem to have shed some light on those opinions. So at very least the Cubans that I have smoked were either duds or simply young and not ready and my inexperience with the finer intricacies of smoking left me to feel that they simply were not that great a cigar and perhaps all of the hype was simply created by the American people based on the fact that they are a forbidden fruit. Please excuse the run on sentance.

No doubt there have simply been plenty of bad cigars which have come out of Cuba. People will have their opinions on either side, more moderately, etc, and like with reviews, you take what works and makes sense to you and use that to help make decisions and form opinions. I sometimes think that expectations with Cuban cigars can be very high - that they will be some kind of magic experience, and that inevitably it will be a let down of sorts when that is not the case. In the end, I think it's probably a number of small differences in characteristics, that when added together, give me a personal preference for Cuban cigars on the whole. I do think you've hit on a good point - like many things, it can be an acquired taste. But again, for some, Cuban cigars may never cut it, and that's OK.

Colt45 Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Well no matter...I'm just going to keep on trying and loving every minute of it! Of course! I hope I'm not coming off as trying to dissuade you (or anyone). If you love cigars, Cubans are a most worthwhile endeavor. I look at this as having a discussion - not just typing stuff on an internet forum

I very much appreciate your reflections...I'm just too drunk at the moment to type anything more intelligent than "Well no matter...I'm just going to keep on trying and loving every minute of it!"
