kiwicrusaders Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I'm fairly new to cigars and want to get a better understanding about storing my cigars. I live in New Zealand, and have a medium sized desktop humidor. Using a digital hygrometer, my temp and humidity range from 65%-67% and temp 20-24 Deg C. If I have a look at these readings in the cupboard I store them in, it varies from 62%-70% and 20 - 25 Deg C. Can ayone provide some guidance on the following:- - Is the temp variance levels 'ok' I am a bit worried it is too warm. - Given the humidty levels appear to be in an acceptable range (maybe lucky living in New Zealand), what would the impact be on storing cigars in their box in the copboard (i.e. not in the humidor)? Thanks for any advice.
Colt45 Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 For me, the temp is a bit high. That aside, if the climate were stable enough, I don't see why boxes couldn't be stored in such a fashion. I think my biggest concern would be rapid and large swings in storage conditions.

I know it is not always easy and this being summer where you are (and you don't have a long summer) you have some time to plan for next year. The cupboard is not a long term solution for you as the humidity will plummet from April -October. Do an ebay search for a cheap thermoelectic wine fridge. Buy some humidification beads and you will be set. I am not sure about NZ but in OZ that would be a $250 proposition and you will be able to store 12-18 boxes or so. May be overkill but it is still the best longterm solution. Alternatively, get an Eskie, add a little humidification and you are away.
Fuzz AI Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 I know how RH affects cigars, but what of temp? If a cigar is stored at an ideal 65%RH, but the temp is in the 25C range or higher, what are the harmful effects?
