El Presidente Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 BBC News Havana, Cuba, Nov 17.- Commander of British destroyer Manchester, of the UK Royal Navy, Lieutenant Commander Rex Cox, said today that they are interested in coming to Cuba often. Cox said it was an honor and privilege for him to arrive to Havana, on occasion of the 491st anniversary of its foundation by Spanish colonists on November 16, 1519. Referring to visits to the ship by the Cuban people tomorrow, Cox said he hopes to see many people. "We will be proud to show them a piece of our boat," he said, referring to the destroyer 141 meters long and 13.6 meters wide, which is anchored in the Cruise Terminal. Launched to the sea in 1980, the Manchester has a displacement of 5, 200 tons and a maximum speed of 30 knots, and traveled through Caribbean waters for the first time last May. (Prensa Latina).
ChanceSchmerr Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Lucky sailors! If only my navy was so inclined!
Frinkiac7 Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Lieutenant Commander Rex Cox Hahahhhahaah, what a name.
winelover Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 It must indeed be a fantastic gig particularly if you are the Captain. Decent nosh, booze and Cuban cigars in the Carribean sun and the chance for some excitement every once in a while when intercepting drug traffickers. Then when you are low on rum and decent smokes you find an excuse to dock in Havana.

Pass it off as a military exercise
ChanceSchmerr Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I suggested we do an "Exercise" in havana last time my ship was in the area, 2007 on HMCS Fredericton. We sailed around Cuba but never came close to port. Barbados and Trinidad were still welcome port stops though

I have a bit of sea salt in my blood with my late maternal grandfather being a WWII navigator and my other grandfather having designed ships. Never been for me though burt always wondered what it would be like. unfortunately the RN is still a little embaressed after we managed to run aground one of our brand new and hugely expensive nuclear hunter killer subs. It literally had to wait for the tide could come in .
