New H.Upmann Mag 50

Recommended Posts

Tried 1st one after sttleing for 2 weeks. These are gems! My opinion on the ELs were sort of muted dog rockets. Actually compare to Jonny O Mag 50 ( If yoiu have had them) . Very packed with flavor, which is strange for such a large cigar that nots aged.

My recomendation is..buy!buy! buy!

» I agree. An excellent release. I just smoked my first Mag 50 EL a few weeks

» ago. I do think they will be very good down the road and am glad I have 24

» left but these are terrific right now.

So what you are saying is that if you had the opportunity to purchase a Cab of 50, you wouldn't hesitate.

Only reason I ask is that I am a little confused. Are all the H. Upmann Mag 50's that are released right now the EL's? Has this Puro been released in a normal cigar? Or is it just an EL?

I was discussing the new Magnum 50 at a recent cigar dinner in Shanghai. Almost unanimously it was considered the best new production cigar since the first months production of Cohiba Siglo IV in 03.

To date in 08 the Magnum 50 has been spectactular. There is (unfortunately) no guarantee the high standard will continue. I don't often say it but get the current release while they are at such a high standard.

» Rob,

» I agree about getting on this action soon!! Most of early codes I have

I can't recall the March 08 but Smithy and I have been smoking July 08 and are being blown away. We see no difference to date.

Every example I have smoked (May 08) has been beautiful.

If I was only allowed to smoke one cigar every day it would be this or a Partagas 898V.

Custom rolled cigars. Origin is Cuban but dont really know specifics, except they are very tasty.

You mean the Siglo VI right Rob? It is my understanding that the IV was released with the rest of the Siglo line in 92' right?

It is good to hear that the July batch is of the same quality. I may have to get some more.

A box of JUL08's it is then.

I have been looking out for a drop off in quality since initial release but to my mind it hasn't ocurred as yet.

I am half way through my first Mag 50 (recent production) and am very impressed. The wrapper was rather oily and I don't feel that it is underfilled. Very pleasing flavors and tons of smoke. The recommendation to buy is a good one! Would like to bet that aging these would result in even more flavor and complexity, but I'm not experienced enought to really know. I am definately willing to put some more away to hedge this bet!

The Mag 50 is now a regular production cigar.

How would you compare it to the Upmann Robusto? Because I think the Robusto is way better than the mag 50 and they're so similar in dimensions.

Of course a Partagas D4 and D5 are nearly the same size but way different, so I guess that shouldn't surprise me.

Just burned another one of these before bedtime, and this one was the best so far. I have recently decreased the humidity to 60%, and along with more time settling in, this made a difference. In addition the the flavors, this example showed significantly more peppery spice than previous ones. All in all, very good now, with lots of mongrel elements boding well for aging.

Unfortunately, it was yet another underfilled Mag 50 with a draw looser than I prefer. Slow, smooth draws helped compensate, but this continues to concern me, especially with regard to aging. This construction appears to be intentional.. is it, and if so, why? Like a flawed diamond.

Someone had mentioned in another thread these cigars must be coming from several different factories and I have to agree. I'm well into my 2nd cab of Mag 50 (EMA MAY 08)

And it's been pure hit or miss. what is most noticiable is the QC between my 2 boxes. (same box code) The 1st box is absolutely flawless  yet box #2 has me wondering how it passed QC.

Here's a shot, kinda hard to tell since I 86'd all the sick looking sticks from the box. nevertheless, the top stick is from box #2 they all share uneven (somewhat crooked) construction, green spots on the wrapper and not so sharp bands. (bottom stick is from my 1st box) getting back to what i said about them being hit or miss...the one's that i had that were "good" were in fact just as good as ones from cab #1 so go figure!
