Colt45 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 I don't know why I went for this one today, as I was not itchy to try one, but I did.... Construction, draw and burn were all exemplary. A glossy, deep brown, subtly mottled, wrapper. Taste-wise, I'll cut to the chase: For the first half, this one was deep, rich, pure unadulterated tobacco. Full bodied from start to finish, but just a notch or so under what I would consider strong. On the draw, not overtly youthful, but the finish was of green wood, though not quite bitter. At the halfway point, the above remained, but it became much more musty - think heavy wool socks you wore, got soaking wet, and left balled up in a corner for a few days. The finish smoothed out some in the second half. It was a very dense cigar, and I can't help but feel I've committed infanticide, as if I had drunk a first growth bordeaux immediately upon release. In my mind, I feel this is a real old time Havana, though I do not have that experience. I'm forgetting I have these. Impossible to score objectively at this time.
Professor Twain Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Thanks for the review. I have an untouched box and you have firmed my resolve to keep them put away.
Colt45 Posted August 26, 2007 Author Posted August 26, 2007 » I am letting mine nap. . . Nap? The rest of my box are now officially Rip Van Winkle. PT, it never hurts to give one a try, I guess. But to my palate, this cigar had no subtlety whatsoever. It was a sledgehammer wrapped in a tobacco leaf.
nugget Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 I must disagree with you, I have had a few now and have found them to be very rich and full of spice and showing quite a bit of complexity. I tend to like some of the younger release however, maybe it's just my palet, similar to the Monte Robusto, a young cigar but to me showing amazing richness and flavor.
Colt45 Posted August 26, 2007 Author Posted August 26, 2007 » I must disagree with you, I have had a few now and have found them to be » very rich and full of spice and showing quite a bit of complexity. » As I normally do after posting a review, I went back and re-read what members had to say about this cigar. Most seemed to find this a complex cigar, while I found it to be very straightforward with little in the way of ancillary flavors. We do all seem to agree that this a dense, rich cigar. If I had to guess, I would think this was blended for the long haul, but that would be purely conjecture on my part.
El Presidente Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Great work Colt I wonder if these have turned for a period of slumber to work their magic. I am tempted to try one this week from the box I had previously reviewed. Will do so later this week.
Mel Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 I have smoked nearly a 10 ct. box and most have been boring one dimensional. I gave one to a mate from out of town and when we cut it was plugged. Made a hell of an impression on him. I will smoke the rest of that first box one here and there but have two others that hopefully will mature into better cigars. IMHO the best "special release" Cohibas are the Selecta Reservas. Way to soon to judge all the new Maduros, heck I haven't tried them all yet, but I will.;-)
Colt45 Posted August 27, 2007 Author Posted August 27, 2007 » I wonder if these have turned for a period of slumber to work their magic. » It's quite possible. I'm not really making any judgments based on this one stick. It was by all means a very intriguing cigar - if ever I've smoked a cigar that has the stuffing to change with time, this is one. I just don't have a clue as to what direction it may take. I found Mel's post interesting, and if you do decide to smoke another soon, I'll be very interested to hear what you think.

Dear malevolent leader, I am sorry that you do not hold Mel in the same high esteem as do I. I rather enjoy his eloquence, tact, and sense of decorum. Sincerely, Colt45. (Mel, no need to say thanks, but please do not forget about the PSD4 Reservas and other cigars you promised me. Sincerely, your pal, Colt45)

I assure you I will smoke more soon I can not keep out of a box even if they are not good. Rob and I have a special friendship. As long as we agree to stay on our side of the world we can be mates. Only one like us per hemisphere. Dear kind and distinguished man(Colt). I am sure your memory is perfect so would you please refresh mine about the PSD4 Reserva. I promised you what? Others? Maybe I should just send you my collection for you to pick over. Give me the mailing address please.
Colt45 Posted August 28, 2007 Author Posted August 28, 2007 » Maybe I should just send you my collection for you to pick over. » :lol2: Esteemed collegue Mel, as tempting as that sounds, I could only truly enjoy it if you were there to watch and weep as I picked over the cream of the crop. Instead, when you get together with Austin in Florida, burn a nice one, and have a couple of drinks for me. Hopefully you will take and post some pics of the event as well--Ross P.S. I will do my best to try and not read too much into you and Maximus as "special" friends. But if you do post pics, and they show you as having grown a moustache...... I'll understand......

After all that glowing **** that you wrote about me, I'd ******* die before you heard a whimper.:-D I already have a beard and moustache and am big hairy bastard. Some round cheer call me super cod. No matter bout all dat special don't mean like Ken and Rob special. Which side of the earth are you on????
Colt45 Posted August 28, 2007 Author Posted August 28, 2007 » Which side of the earth are you on???? Northeast U.S. To be a little less vague, I was born and grew up in one of Boston's neighborhoods. I still reside relatively close.

I think I've said before - you just hang onto those reservas until we're able to smoke them together. I'll bring the don domesticos (now that you've changed you're mind about Puch Churchills).
