Guibou Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 :-P I can't wait to receive mine later this week :-D ! Guibou
shrink Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 An excellent review, and well-deserved accolades, Rob. I was fortunate enough to obtain a cab of FR OVSU, and it is without doubt the finest Punch in my collection. So good, in fact, that I often overlook them in favor of an aged RS#11 or other vitola. I should just go ahead an smoke 'em up. Life ain't a dress rehearsal, right? Your assessment of this cigar is right on target. Not especially strong, but loaded with classic Punch flavors. This one is at the top of its game.
pnutbutrsangwich Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Looks nice! You didn't steal any of those 02 SS2s for yourself by any chance did you?:-D
Moglman Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Thanks for the review Rob. Stickman asked me to post my tasting notes in the other thread and have been fargin busy. I will fire one up this weekend and refresh my memory. I recall trying to place this cigar in the Punch lineup. From the first, I recall the woody, creamy tobacco flavors, and looking for the citrus or orange cream I expect in the lineup that never really materialized, and then the memory fails. That was a while back. I definitely need to go into this with a clean palate and will add my review soon.
GP012 Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Sounds very interesting, although I've never heard or read of cheese based tasting notes. cool!

Smithy introduced me to "Camembert" in a cigar tasting. The second he mentioned it I new it to be right but I just could not put my finger on it. Essentially a savoury cream note.
Shooter Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 A gorgeous cigar and a mouthwatering review!! Thanks!

Fantastic. I love Camembert and roast beef sandwiches... heaven
Guibou Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Received my cabinet! Thanks to Lisa, especially for the packing ;-) It is beautiful but I haven't tried one so far... Just keep it for a while in my humidor, and looking at it every evening, waiting for the right moment ......... ! What a smell when I open this cabinet... Cheers!

servebig Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Received mine yesterday...cab split with Mario (Josie). Being the impetuous lad that I am I smoked one yesterday and am smoking my second as I type this. First of all I will issue a disclaimer and say that I am a fan of fuller bodied cigars...this is closer to the other end of the spectrum. That being said, I see what Rob is talking about. While I can't taste any cheeses...there is a flavor that is unique. Sweet, light marzapan...almost a peppermint quality. I have not had any newer PChs, but I will guess that this cigar is unique in that with 9 years of age, the flavors seem to have intensified. Unfortunately, too many mild/med cigars do not benefit with age as do fuller cigars, but this one seems to buck the trend. The construction, burn and solid feel is absolutely magnificent...a true work of art in that regard. I can't remember smoking a cigar that had this straight of a burn. Perfect first cigar of the day! When I last checked there were still some available and I strongly recommend these for those who want something special! Barney

traveldude Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 » Oh- My- Gosh!!! What a totally tasty review. It's been 18 months since I enjoyed a Punch Church (and it wasn't a 98 either). Must add to my "To Buy List".

Marzipan? Peppermint? Next you are going to say that you tasteds hints of Snickers and Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. :-D I will post a less esoteric review when I break into my portion of the cab....unlike SOME of us, I can wait more then 15 minutes after receving my cigars to smoke them ;-)
El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 I saw a request for a 98 Punch Churchill review so yesterday I had a little time late afternoon to crack a cabinet and drift back with one of my favourite Churchills. I still believe that 98 Punch Churhills are the last great Punch Churchill. I was keen to see whether I still believed that to be the case. Weight in the hand was perfect. Smell at cold was the finest camembert rind. CLipped the end and tested the draw which was perfect. There is a distinctive cedar and aged cheese on the lips. I drew at cold three or four times as I was entranced. I fired up the Churchill, sat back in the rocker and looked out towards the slowly darkening afternoon. Nice time of year here in Brisbane. Still warm but with predominant South Easterly sea breezes. The initial flavours were of wood shavings and cream cheese. God I love this cigar. Body is Medium light....no pretence to be a heavy hitter. This Punch Churchill has a class and poise which feels no needs not copy anything else. How to describe it? Similar to a Winston shortbread note with a touch of LGC Taino sweetnesss. A touch of Esplendido grassiness, Bolivar Corona Gigante earthiness, St Luis Rey crispness. By the half way mark all I could taste was razor sharp clean and crisp tobacco flavours.... savoury cream ala the finest of Manchego cheese and wood chips. Distinctive. Alluring. The core flavour profile lasted to the end. These days I seldom reach for a Churchill but I am reminded why I should take off my blinkers more often and take the time. A great experience of simplicity and complexity all rolled into one. My favourite dishes are always peasant dishes of 2-3 unique flavours. BBQ rabbit with snails drizzled with a mix of olive oil, garlic and white wine. The Punch Churchill of 98 delivers a similar core profile of wood, cream cheese and clean, crisp toasted tobacco. A joy. 92/100 5/6 Smokerings
SoCal Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 I was gifted a Punch churchill from a '97 box which I am planning on smoking tonight. I'm looking forward to it!
