Adric Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Hey all, I've recently had a think about how much I'm enjoying this hobby, and about how much my meager bank account is enjoying this hobby, and I'd have to say that one is enjoying it far more than the other. And so I now am putting out the call for suggestions on a nice low price cigar, I'm not a Cuban snob or anything, I'm willing to try cigars from other regions. While I'd dearly love to smoke a Monte No. 4 every day, on a student's part time pay, that's quickly going to put me in the poorhouse. This might be hard to get feedback from the overseas members, but something below $10 AUS per cigar would be a great starting point Any and all suggestions would be appreciated! - Adric
Colt45 Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Adric, I know this is not really the type of answer you're seeking, but have you considered cutting back to one or two cigars a week, at least for the time being? A little easier on the wallet, and gives the cigars you do have more of a chance to gain some age. As for NCs, off the top of my head, the one I would recomend would be Padron - the regular line. They make a number of sizes, and are very consistent in construction and flavor. I like the 3000 and the 6000. They are very reasonably priced, and a good value. If you can get them shipped to you for near what they cost in the U.S, they're worth a shot. If NCs end up being nearly as expensive as Havanas, why not buy the cigars you know you like when you can, and try a few singles each of something new when you are able. Sorry for being so long winded, and the above is, of course, just my personal opinion. Good luck in your quest.
harwellplant Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 there are very good machine made and short filler offerings available, as far as machine mades and short fillers go. my favorite may be the uppman regalias, partagas chicos, and partagas de luxes. i was given a jose piedra cazadore to smoke with a friend last friday. not great or complex, but certainly not bad. i don't know if any of these offerings fit within your australian currency budget.
Mel Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Hello Adric, what can you get the Partagas Shorts for? These are great little smokes and do not taste cheap. Try one and LMK. Mel.
1f1fan Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 I would cut down and only smoke 2-4 cigars a week. Stick with smaller sizes like minutos or marevas (Partagas shorts, RASCC, Boli PC's etc) and if you need a daily smoke look for a machine made or perhaps some chicos if they are still around. If budget was my biggest factor I'd rather smoke better cigars less often.
Adric Posted December 13, 2006 Author Posted December 13, 2006 Yeah you're right, I to would rather smoke better cigars less often, and it's probably a good idea I cut back anyway, my tastes have never been on the cheap side, regardless of my income, for a student, I sure seem to like the pricey cigars and premium scotch, why, oh why wasn't I born already an independently wealthy heir?! I can get the Partagas Shorts for around $10, which is fairly acceptable, there are a couple of other vitolas in the Partagas range that are of the budget price, so I have a little "investigative" "work" ahead of me :-P I'll also give those Padron's a go, I've actually heard from a couple of reviews that they're rather nice. Cheers for all the feedback everyone, I'll be taking it on board, yes, even the advice to cut back to less cigars of a better quality rather than more cigars of a sub standard, I guess the reasoning could be something like: "Steak twice a week instead of McDonalds every day." When it's put like that, it's not so tough a descision ;-)
broozer Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 i second the idea of getting some jose piedras and quinteros. affordable good cuban cigars. piedras are a daily smoke for me as i can't afford to smoke $8-$10 dollar cigars EVERY day. bruce
DrAlejandro Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 i'd suggest the fonseca line... cosacos are pretty nice smokes and are a bit cheaper than the regular PC's. Also without getting into machine mades there are a whole slew of "half corona" smokes that are big on flavor and a bit cheaper... I'd put the partagas short and the SCDLH principe on the top of that list when looking for value. Not a whole lot cheaper than the monte 4's but sometimes 20-30 bucks makes a big difference :-)
tigger Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 » Any and all suggestions would be appreciated! » » - Adric I think the RyJ No. 2 A/T's are a pretty good bargain. Edited to add the "2"
