Even leaving all that aside, what’s the allure of a second 52-rg vitola?! Ok, it’s a parejo. Else? Pigtail. Will be gone upon cutting. And here you are - holding an even shorter cigar in your hands. Wow! Well, perhaps that’s the whole idea.

Glad to still be keeping discontinueds and some regionals. Would have loved to see a more intriguing addition. A bit wider fanned, given it’s only two to choose from.

Cuban Diplomaticos Premieres In Bulgaria—Sans Pigtail

The new Diplomaticos Cancilleres was supposed to have a pigtail cap. Turns out, it doesn’t.

When Habanos S.A. announced that it was adding a size to the tiny Diplomaticos brand earlier this year, it was news for two reasons. Not only was it going to be the first new regular-production size for the line in decades, the cigar was going to be made with a pigtail cap, a type of head typically reserved for high-end Cohibas (like Behikes) and nearly every Trinidad.

But when the new Diplomaticos Cancilleres made its global debut a few days ago in Sofía, Bulgaria, the cigars were missing something—the pigtail cap. Instead they had traditional, mounted heads. So, what happened?

It turns out there was a mistake in the materials presented at the Habanos Festival, an error that was repeated when the news of the upcoming release broke in mid-October. The Cancilleres doesn’t have a pigtail at all.

As for the rest of the details, Cancilleres measures 5 1/8 inches long by 50 ring gauge (not 5 by 52 as previously reported), and comes packed in boxes of 25. The word cancilleres isn’t Spanish for “canceled” (like that pigtail), instead it translates to “chancellors” in Spanish.

The cigar is a relative bargain in today’s world of stunningly expensive Cuban cigars, being sold for 447.38 euros ($520) per box, or $20.80 per cigar in Bulgaria. 

There isn’t a precise date as to when the new Diplomaticos will be available to the rest of the world, but look for a blind tasting by our editorial panel in a future issue of Cigar Insider.

Diplomáticos Cancilleres Goes on Sale in Bulgaria

After premiering at a launch event on Saturday in Sofia, Bulgaria, the Diplomáticos Cancilleres is now on sale in the country.

The cigar is a 5 1/8 (130mm) x 50 robusto, a vitola known as the centro fino in the Cuban cigar portfolio and one that is shared with the Vegueros Centrofinos, which was introduced in 2018.

Pricing is set at €17.90 ($20.87) per cigar and €447.50 ($521.77) for a box of 25 cigars.

When the Cancilleres was first announced, it was notable not just for being the first new size for the line in decades but also because it would be the first size in the line to use a pigtail cap.

However, the cigars have arrived with no pigtail, just a standard cap. The error seems attributable to an issue with the marketing materials and two vitolas with very similar factory names, i.e. the names given to specific vitolas. This cigar, which has the factory name centro fino, doesn’t have a pigtail; however, the centrofino vitola, which is also 130mm long but has a 52 ring gauge, does have a pigtail cap.

The name Cancilleres comes from the Spanish word for a foreign minister or chancellor, selected for being a symbol of elegance and prestige.

The Diplomáticos brand will turn 60 years old next year, having been established in 1966 as a more affordable version of the Montecristo brand. At its peak, the line consisted of seven vitolas, but two of those were discontinued in the early 1980s, followed by two more in 2006, and finally two more in 2010, leaving the Diplomáticos No.2 as the lone vitola prior to the release of the Cancilleres. The line has also been used for 17 Edición Regional releases dating back to 2012.

Kaliman Caribe distributes Habanos S.A. products in Bulgaria as well as in Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia. There has not been an announcement about when the Diplomáticos Cancilleres will be available in other markets.
