Question for our Mexico travellers.

I know it is early days yet, but what has been your experience since January 15?

MEXICO BANNED SMOKING IN PUBLIC

The law came into force on January 15, 2023 and it applies to pretty much any public area. The only legal place to smoke tobacco in Mexico is inside private homes or private outdoor spaces.

I'm following this one.  My wife and I have taken about 22 trips to Mexican AI's.  I'd like to take more, but if I can't smoke, it will be a shame. I've reached out a few times to the Excellence Resorts people about this.  They haven't responded. Some of their properties have/had indoor cigar lounges, so maybe that's an option?

I just returned from 3 weeks travelling through Guanajuato, Colima and Jalisco. Everyday I would have a cigar in the parks or on the hotel rooftops and nobody ever gave me a second look. The resort areas, or congested public areas might be an issue tho.

In my experence, the only people that ever have a problem with smoking are the gringo tourists.

I wonder that as well we've had great experiences at Excellence resorts in the past. Hopefully they have a workaround.

In Cancun at this very moment smoking a Cohiba..

Which resort? Are you in a general area? Your balcony?  Do they post signs now?  Is smoking on the beach off limits?

I am in Hyatt Ziva. I am discreetly smoking in my balcony. smoking is prohibited almost everywhere public. Signs everywhere. But it’s not very strongly enforced. The resort does have some smoking areas with chairs as well.

@prshah25 I loved that hotel but hated their rules on smoking.

Will also report back after this weekend.

I’ve got an Airbnb on the beach with a nice balcony area, not expecting any issues there. It would not suprise me however, If the cops are shaking down drunk gringos on the main tourist drags.

I'm in Tijuana currently. The LCDH has had to cover their humidor in paper so you can't see the cigars from the outside and doesn't seem to allow you to smoke inside anymore which is a real shame as I always loved going and sitting there with a cappuccino and enjoying a cigar. On the main drag of Avenida Revolución people still smoke outside and most clubs have ashtrays at every table. I went to a concert and there was an outdoor smoking section. I also saw about half a dozen folks get searched by the Policía because they were smoking while others across the street weren't stopped so seems to be business as usual. About half of the small convenience stores I've seen seem to have their tobacco products hidden from plain view also. It's also being hit with the atmospheric river weather currently so hard to tell if less people are smoking due to the rain than the laws.

Just got back from Maya Riviera. I saw smokers (cigarette) on the beach and in the resort areas most of the week but maybe not as many as you would normally find? Not sure.
But they did have ashtrays on the balconies off the rooms and didn’t seem to care. I would assume it’s different in other areas and maybe enforced more in busy Cancun?
