I have a box of 22, 2003 JLP Cazadores.

Will be trying my first one of the box this afternoon.

Place your bets on what they will be like.

Completely flavorless?

Extremely mild, but with some flavor?

Much improved with age?

Etc.

The JLP Cazadores is one of the best value cheapies out there.  They are strong robust flavourful cigar with lots of edge when young.  If these have been stored well in their original cello,  you should be in for a treat.      All hinges on storage

Yeah, I've had plenty of recent production ones and enjoy them for a nice, value smoke.

Being on the stronger side when young is what leads me to predict that they will still have some flavor

Yeah, in the 50+ aged smokes I have had that were given to me by others, they were all over the map from flavorless, musty, nice and mellow and smooth and tasty, etc.

I assume the radical variation in them was likely due to unknown storage conditions

Light one up and do a review.  Although the forum has been going form so many years, there are so few reviews of older cheapies, I think lots of people would find it really interesting.

Will definitely do that, as I suspect very few people have ever had or bothered aging, a cheap Cigar like a JLP.

Part of why I started this thread for fun, and will add my thoughts when I smoke one

Pictures would be good as well, showing burn lines etc etc  do it as one of the competition reviews,  who knows it might win you a box of cigars

Will do.
Normally only take a picture before cutting and removing the band, but I'll take some of its progress while smoking.

When I received them they were in their original 5 pack cardboard boxes, inside the 5, 5 pack box.

That is my main concern as I have read that storing in cardboard, especially for long periods of time, isn't good, but never tested it personally

Hmm.... cardboard storage could be a curveball.    For lighter cigars it's usually 85% the case you're going to have a cigar that tastes predominantly of cardboard.  With a strong JPCazzie, you might still be in luck.      I've had a few bad experiences with cardboard storage, and drew a line under it,  never again.

Yeah, that's exactly what I have heard can happen, and why I never keep anything in its cardboard boxes. Always store them loose or in a spare cedar box, which is how I have stored them since I got them

I have a 5 pack of same. Back in the day many vendors would offer free JLP with box purchases. I left em in cp.
@KCCubano

So, how much age did you give them still in the cardboard, and how did they taste?

Never touched them! You smoke one and I will fire up one this weekend. Never took out of CP. All others I do.
Cool, sounds like an interesting experiment with 2 of us doing it

So, smoked one yesterday afternoon and it was very surprising.

Extremely flavorful still, but much smoother than young ones, and only a little bit milder taste-wise.

I have read multiple opinions on aging and most say that a cheap/low end Cigar wont get any better with age, but these certainly did.

It was one of the best aged Cigars I have ever had.

Definitely glad I have 21 more.

Burn was pretty crappy and even after using my PerfecDraw, it was still very tight.

But the excellent taste over rode all that.

Also had no hint even of the cardboard boxes they were stored in for 18 years. Was very afraid it would have picked up a cardboard taste based on what I have read, but it didn't at all.

Based on the one I smoked yesterday, you should definitely give one a try.

I suspect you will be very pleasantly surprised.

For a cheap/low end cc, it aged amazingly

I enjoy the JLP recent production for when I will be doing something while smoking and not really paying much attention to the cigar.

This one was outstanding as far as taste

I'm glad.

I'm not surprised, they are a great cigar in their own bracket, and often punch well above.   They are the cigar i smoked most off back in 1998-99.  I really looked forward to packaged of them arriving from Switzerland,  that yellow cello bundle.   Still have a lot of affection for this cigar.

I find it really amazing that HSA haven't saw fit to try and produce a hand made longfiller from JLP Vuelta Arriba tobacco.   For me JLP have a distinctive salty, sour thing going on, and with the right marketing/production  they could really make something of it.   So much hype is made out of Appelation Controlee in the Chocolate, wine, coffee world. I  really thing they should try and push the Vuelta Arriba as a very specific product.      Yes, you can still keep the cheepies going, but do a limited run of high end hand made cigars.

I agree. Great smokes for what they are and cost. Just a little rough around the edges young

This in a way is how they are designed.  I believe "Cazadore" means hunter, and cigars of that name are blended to be 'open air' walking smokes. i.e so full bodied that even if its a windy day, you are still getting a bracing full bodied smoke.
