Popular Post FatPete Posted March 16, 2019 Popular Post Posted March 16, 2019 Montecristo No. 4 (LEP FEB 16) PSP/HQ-Arrived Jun 18 stored at 62RH 18C Smoked 3C and 90RH. I'm on an extensive trek through the Romeo y Julieta marca (sure are plenty of them ?) but I'm glad to be diverted through to Montecristo for this review. My favourite quick cigar is the Monte No. 5, and being winter it's a regular smoke at the moment. I'm also fond of a good No. 2 (hold on that's probably better phrased as a Montecristo No. 2 ?) , but that's about it for Monte for me. It's 3C outside with heavy sleety rain so I immediately reached for a Monte 5 but then I saw a box of Monte 4 I had bought PSP/HQ from here that I had yet to try. Why not brace myself for the elements & live slightly dangerously I thought, so off I went with one for a walk around Inverlochy castle. This is a nice ruin dating from 1280, and was home to the Comyns who were one of the most powerful families in the Highlands at the time. It has a conveniently sheltered nook amongst the stonework, perfect for my cigar smoking today. So to the cigar. I'd had about 3 Monte 4s before as singles, all quite forgettable. Hoping for better things with this one, though I know only the Partagas D4 is made in greater numbers. The cigar was firm with slightly uneven construction with a ridge in the wrapper near the head. It looked like milk chocolate, and that was the aroma I got at cold. Easy draw. First Third Pure cocoa start, yummy, slightly sweet, from the first puff. Burn was a little off to start but touched up well and was perfect for the rest of the cigar. A little white pepper appeared but it was 90% cocoa at this point. Wrapper split at head, not to worry. Second third The start of the second third was the same as the first but a little leather lingers on the palate after each puff. Then it began to evolve. Leather becomes more pronounced with a vegetal element now;sadly the cocoa is fading. Last third Mild White pepper with leather and vegetal taste now, very smooth, cocoa has gone now. Nutmeg in the beautiful aroma that this cigar gives off. Body just under medium until the last third, the last being straight on the medium button. Full marks also for ash holding, as you can see in the pictures, so I'd needn't have worried at the start about the construction. I really enjoyed this cigar and was surprised by its evolution in a Petit Corona format. Maybe others can tell me if this is usual in this cigar or just I got a good one. I'm rating this an 8.5/10 on my scale, but now I've read a few more reviews and understand the conventional scale, this would be a 92 point cigar. Pure dead brilliant! 6
