A member posted a thread along the following lines but it was a tad .....convoluted but the idea was great.

To summarise: How health smart are our members?

Can you recite your blood pressure and resting heart rate as measured in the past six months (no longer).

If you can't....from personal experience I can tell you that you should ;)   Resting heart rate is easy. Your phone will likely do it.  Blood pressure, pop into the local pharmacy if you don't have a mobile blood pressure machine.

For the record, if  I had had regular check ups, I would have saved myself a ton of pain.  If you have concerns, take this opportunity to do something about it. Blokes are the worst at putting crap off.

Current snapshot:

Last checkup                  Less than 6 months.

BP   (blood pressure)      122 over 70

RHR (resting heart rate)   50

let us know. and/or fill in the poll.

I don't keep stats and my personal view of medicine runs contrary to seeing a doctor regularly for checkups.

That said, I exercise 3-4 times/week (strength, cardio, yoga) and tend to eat smaller portions of a largely vegetarian diet (meat 3x/week). Probiotics, moderate alcohol consumption and good mental/psychological/social/spiritual health. I live my life with an eye towards maintaining a naturally healthy state.

I got sick about a month ago. I spent three weeks having a temperature of 103.5 and spending about 18 hours a day in bed. During that time I had 5 blood tests. I had a fever, chills, sweats, fatigue.

As it turns out my blood pressure is Stellar. My cholesterol is perfect. My LDL and that other number are spot-on. Heart rate is good. Kidneys and liver are functioning perfectly. Echocardiogram turned out perfect. Chest x-ray, also perfect.

I do not have any of the alphabet hepatitis I do not have the flu I do not have the zika virus swine flu bird flu chicken flu pigeon flu any STDs AIDS nor do I have West Nile virus or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. I do not have any bacterial infections nor do I have lupus. They tested for about 20 other things all came back negative.

Just as I was getting referred to an infectious disease specialist I miraculously got better. Doctor has absolutely no idea what I had other than a viral infection. Mind you no idea what virus, but a viral infection.

So, other than feeling like a giant dog turd for 3 weeks I am in picture perfect health and 100% back to normal.

Apologies for any lack of punctuation or sentence structure as this was talk to text. I happen to have fat fingers. Don't judge me.

Our bodies tell us when we are living wrong (headaches, joint pain, GI Issues, poor stamina, bad breath, heartburn and reflux issues, sinus issues, ear issues, poor sleep, big gut, etc., etc.). Unfortunately we tend to ignore them in favor or vices and bad habits. I’ve had my own personal issues within the recent year. Things add up and always catch up to us. In many cases, issues can be reversed or limited by simply modifying what we choose to put in our mouths( or not). Proper sleep, exercise, and limiting stress are the other factors. The formula is easy. Making the necessary changes often requires a big scare... and even then, some folks remain in denial. I’ve found the main thing is to acknowledge and address ALL symptoms, be self-educated and do objective research, concentrate on long term results and not short term, and avoid extreme expectations and quick fixes.

Found out I have a heart murmur.  Heading to the cardiologist on Wednesday.  Can't wait.....

Good luck but I am sure that you will be fine :ok:

Brandon's post is a very good one.   Find out what is wrong, find out what you need to do, get the right team around you, question everything, research everything, have a plan and execute it with a discipline that borders on the frightening.

Resting heart rate: 74

BP: 127 over 84 (just tested)

I have one of those Omron blood pressure monitors, and usually check once a week. And I wear a Fitbit to keep track of my heart rate.

BP 118/68, resting heart rate 50. I exercise 5-6 times per week, alternating between cardio and resistance training. I can jog 5 miles non-stop in under 44 minutes. But I am due for an annual physical. Thanks for the reminder.

I rarely went to the doctor, other than orthopedic issues ( hit be auto riding bike). Two years ago, I had some lower GI issues.  Went to the Dr. to get checked out, it was nothing serious. While diagnosing the GI issue, he ordered an ultrasound of my lower abdomen. A mass was found on my left kidney, turned out to be cancer. I was very fortunate that it was found early. Partial nephrectomy and so far cancer free. I never had any pain or symptoms, from the cancer. Without going for a checkup, I would be facing a very difficult and life threatening road ahead. GET A YEARLY CHECKUP!!!!! We all feel bulletproof, but you never know what may be lurking. Early detection is the key.

Funny this should come up, I'm currently under investigation for high BP (157/94 was my last reading). No surprise really as my family has a history of it and half of them are on medication. Dr has arranged a 24 hour BP test for next week which I'm not looking forward to.

Great advice Rob. After I retired at 47 I let myself go. I put on weigh and ate like a trash can. Two years ago I ended up with the ‘betus. Today because  of healthier choices BP is 120/80, heart os 70 BPM, Cholesterol is normal, A1C is a bit too low, and I’ve lost 70 pounds. I’ve been taken off of blood pressure and diabetes medicine. If you don’t have your health, what do you have?

diet and excercize. It works.

I've made it a habit of getting a yearly blood work done and I review all of my numbers and see if there's areas where I need to improve by changing my diet etc. Thankfully everything is within range or below (when below is good) the only thing I need to watch is my sodium intake.

The key for me is the fiance and I make a meal plan every sunday for Monday to Friday and we choose healthy options.  Whatever we make for dinner is lunch also for the next day. We also choose our breakfasts (we rotate between 6/7 options and i have calculated the macros for each one). This process takes a bit of getting use to but i've been able to put on lean muscle mass and my energy levels are much better. I can avoid the dreaded head bob even in the most boring of meetings.

On weekends we give a bit more flexibility for certain meals and allow ourselves to enjoy any cravings guilt free and try not to over do it.  This allows us to stay on track during the week knowing we can satisfy these cravings during the week. I'm sure this process will be tougher when we have kids but for now it works.

Beyond this working out 4 times a week for 1.5 hours at a time and sleep!!! Get at least 7 hours every night and on occasion 8.

Being healthy is a lifestyle and is multi-faceted approach. Take on each component and build good habits!! You can do it!! :)

Good luck. Take it all in your stride. You will likely find that any changes spur you on to a better outcome.

Spot on.  I didn't realise i had a long term arrhythmia. It lead to heart failure and 18 months to get back to near normal.  One check and they would have picked it up.  I am a moron.

Man... Has going to the doctor's office changed that much since the last time I went? ?

I think I'm still a couple of years away from needing those tests... But I know they're not that far away, either. ?
