Ken Gargett Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 enforced or voluntary? i ask as i have found over the last couple of months, i think i have had a total of 2, perhaps 3 cigars. and then only, i think, with rob for vids. has not been so much deliberate as just happened. just been busy with other stuff. thoroughly enjoyed those couple and look forward to more down the track but i must say that i have not particularly missed them. sometimes in the past, i have had breaks for whatever reason and often really been keen to get back on the horse. nothing obviously different this time. i am not a big smoker by any means - never had a cigarette - and will very often have a week or two without going near one. very rarely have more than one or two a week. if i am off on a fishing trip or to cuba or europe, i'll definitely have a few more. but when i do, always enjoy the experience. was wondering about others. do you ever find you've just not felt like one for a while? or do you have enforced breaks? (indeed, just writing this has made me feel like i'd enjoy one tonight if i get the chance).
OZCUBAN Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Only when I am ill ? because it would be a waste wouldn’t be able to taste it properly anyway 1
anacostiakat Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Same here. Mostly when a cold hits or if I get sick.
n0s4atu Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Yes, sometimes life just gets in the way, so I end up on a cigar hiatus. I could probably squeeze one in, but to me that defeats the purpose of enjoying a cigar. I don't want to be rushed, I just want to kick back and enjoy it.
Baccy Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I'm in the same boat Ken... Haven't had one all week because of either, bad weather or having to work late Certainly not by choice...
kwsaw63 Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I usually have 2-3 a week except when I have a cold or if circumstances prevent me from smoking. Too weak willed to go on enforced breaks!
Corylax18 Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Same here. I hate “forcing it”. So when it gets particularly cold or if Im ill I can go several weeks without one.
godpheonix Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 When winter hits here in Atlantic Canada, i'm of the supply for 5-6 months...which i don't mind at all. Then i dig in and thoroughly take every advantage i have to lighting some up for the next 6 months. My routine now is 3 back to back cigars from 7:30pm to about midnight on an average of 4-5 days a week. During that time i can catch up on my shows and movies and docs. combining these has been fruitful to say the least.
David88 Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I often take breaks from cigars often if I’m just too busy but sometimes I will go a month or so without feeling like it. I wouldn’t class myself as a big smoker anyway, I will have 1 or 2 a week on average unless I’m on holiday and I’ll have more
Arctic Dude Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Being almost exclusively an outside smoker, and living in Northern Ontario, Canada, I - like @godpheonix - only smoke when the weather permits (roughly April to October). During the good seasons, I try to get out whenever possible (free from other commitments, parenting responsibilities). I would say 5/week on average. Some days could be 3 over the course of a sunny day or when camping, but then maybe none for days. It's quite variable.
cfc1016 Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I took a ~10 year hiatus when cigarettes had ruined my palate. I had a nasty head cold this winter that made cigars taste like nothing. Didn’t smoke again til i was better. I had dental work a couple months ago and had to stop for about a week to allow my mouth to properly heal. I genuinely enjoy smoking every day. I’m probably going to be going into a job this fall where I won’t have much time for a cigar (~12 hours/6days per week). I’ll likely supplement with chicos and the occasional cuban cigarette, and look forward to spring, when the weather and work schedule will be more conducive to daily smoking again.

rabidraccoon Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I only smoke outside so I'll have long stretches during the winter when its too cold to enjoy a cigar outside. So basically from November to March I'll take a break.
PapaDisco Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I read your subject line the other way around: as a break for cigars, not a break from cigars. a Cigar Break is something I look to squeeze into the schedule wherever I can, as much for the cigar as for the meditative relaxation. But because of the time commitment it's far to easy to end up on an accidental Cigar Sabbatical. It's soooooooo healthy to turn all those other distractions off and just sit and think, chat, or whatever, and a proper Cigar Break makes you do that. I suspect that's why cigar smokers outlive non-smokers. Otherwise, it's far to easy to let a hectic life take control and grind you down to a nub. 1
patrick_harmon44 Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 When I go on a cigar bender I usually end up with a couple week break after. Weather, that's what b&ms are for. And garagesSent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk
Lotusguy Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 No voluntary breaks, no. Only when weather, location, time, or health issues don’t allow me to smoke.
ayepatz Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 I’m not a regular smoker, as my work doesn’t allow for it. So, yes, I frequently have long spells (weeks at a time) away from cigars. Living vicariously through the forum keeps me going and I try to make up for it when I have downtime at home. ?
LGC Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Usually average a couple cigars a month... less during winter and summer heat waves. Quit for about 6 months after tendon surgery. Currently going on almost a year since my last smoke... due to health issues
MrGlass Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 My typical consumption is around 1 a week. And while there is definitely a budgetary component at play here, the main reason for this is that I simply have no desire to regularly smoke any more than this. But I will still regularly go for weeks without any, although this is normally a matter of circumstance rather than an actual decision to do so. And that's fine - the moment I have a problem accepting these breaks, I'll know that I have a bigger problem on hand that needs to be addressed. 1
JR Kipling Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 I had to take a break when I caught that nasty flu bug that had been going around. Because of sinus issues, that meant no cigars or pipes since Christmas of last year. I’ve only recently been able to smoke again - - - and it’s wonderful !
TNT009 Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 When I’m training for work, when I’m running 30 miles a week and hitting gym every day!
KavalanWhisky Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 Similar to you Ken, I've never smoked a cigarette and so never classed myself as a smoker but when I started smoking Cigars 4 years ago I only rarely had one, then moved to maybe having one once a week. I'm now smoking 2-3 times a week and sometimes 2 cigars in one evening. I originally set out to just find some cigars I like and then just stick to those but the more I sample the more I keep finding ones I like and then working on price points on whether it will make it into the weekly rotation. 24:24 hasn't really helped either with the access to a lot more cigars with a very good price point...
