Por Larranaga Petit Corona | Ron Caney ‘Anejo Centuria’

By KBG

I had not had a cigar for a few weeks, three weeks to be precise – a lingering, irritating summer flu/cold or whatever. Coughing up great chunks of who knows what is not really conducive to a good cigar. Finally, felt well enough and went small. One of the very few small smokes I like. The Por Larranaga Petit Corona. EKA SEP 08. I have seen some discussion on these on the forum of late. My view is that if you smoke them under five years, it is a total waste. I never get anything worthwhile until they have at least five years on them and a decade is even better. This one still had a hint of that exciting russet in the wrapper. It was mature and supple, small but perfectly formed, and very quickly moved into that lovely trademark caramel note. Some earthy characters.

Like the review. Also, interesting write up on Vietnam.  I will have to check out the documentary.  My old man only recently started talking openly about his time in Vietnam which has been a very interesting experience.

I've never had a caramel bomb but I love PLPCs. I agree 5 years plus and they get good, very good. I wonder, what Cuban cigars are outstanding when smoked with under 5 years of box age?

Cohiba Talisman?

I was too young to be drafted during the Vietnam War. But my Dad did two tours as a Lt. Colonel. He was in 173rd Airborne as a logistician. The second tour, he was the head logistician. He only told me a little bit of what happened over there. He didn't like to talk about it, even though I was fascinated by the daily body count on the evening news. (How morbid was that?).

He said the viet cong attacked their base and when he came out of the Quonset hut he was sleeping in, he shot one of them with his M16 and took off the left side of his body. I stopped asking after that.

So I kind of grew up surrounded by the war in the 60's and early 70's.

I'd say there are definitely some that smoke well before that. Some of it, of course, is box dependent but.. I had a cab of early 2015 RASSs that were so good that I smoked the last one of them this month. Smaller formats require less age (at least from my experience), Partagas Shorts with three years don't get any better.
