polarbear
So, the missus has decided we should go to Tasmania for our next holiday (we're/she's thinking around August) Aside from look at all the beautiful scenery what else is there to do while we're there? I'm told there are Whiskey and Cider tours, that sounds nice I also told it's great motorcycle country, but as I'm the only one out of us that has a bike licence (and she won't double up with me), that sounds less nice. Ideas? Also, if there happens to be some secret cigar lounge there that no one speaks of, I would very much like to know

Fuzz
Last time I was down in Tas for work during the winter, it was cold and wet. The winds can really bite something fierce, temps can get into the single digits, but it is quite picturesque. Cradle Mountain is the place to go if you want to see some truly spectacular landscapes. And you can go to Ben Lomond of Mount Mawson for skiing.
LordAnubis
Drive!!! I spent a week in Tassie with the lady friend. Last year August. Freezing bloody cold. But it was great fun! Top of the mountain (mt Wellington) in Hobart had snow on it. Blowing a gale and I'm pretty sure my face froze over. Driving is the best! Hire a small sportish sort of car, I got a Ford Focus which was perfect. We had a 2 days 2 night in Hobart, went to the Mona Gallery (kinda weird art gallery, but ok), Martime museum (awesome), Cadbury factory (crap, don't waste your time), plenty of good seafood, Salamanca markets was ok, but really just a street market. Freycinet national park for 2 nights, lots of nature walk etc out there. Perfect for a smoke out on the cliffs watching the sun set. Great place. Then 2 nights in Strahan. 6 hour drive I think from Freycinet to Strahan. The lyall hwy is the most awesome drive ever!!! Just hours of driving through hilly forest with lots of switchbacks etc. This is where you need that hot hatch. In Strahan do the river cruise Gordon river, was awesome I thought! Didn't get to Cradle Mountain as the roads may have been a bit hairy at that time, and didn't make it to Launnie I say do it man! I really liked it! Guest rob
Me and my missus are headed to Tassie late August.... Motivated by a whisky tour, and the want to see thee place, of course. Might bump into you there!
JohnS
I drove around Tasmania in January 1998 with my wife. It is similar to New Zealand, in my opinion. Just enjoy the nature and the lack of 'city-life' pressure and stimulus from our gadgets and you'll be fine. If you want an action holiday, don't go to Tasmania, go somewhere else! Jeremy Festa
Mate. Lucky you. I am planning on taking the family next year. My parents went for golf. Two of the best courses in Australia are there. They also hit up the distilleries. Obviously there's the nature aspect. i would love to trek the old growth forests. And in particular see Shipsterns Bluff breaking. (Just me) as I have mates that live and surf there. Also MoMA would be a must. Just started researching, and the Qantas Epicure site has an awesome run through of all the foodie spots and notable accommodation on sale! MIKA27
It seems to me there may be a couple other BOTL heading that way so it's self explanatory what you "Can do" Driving is the best and you must head up along the East coast to Bicheno, great food along that way, nice seafood although we do have that pretty much most of Australia. Be sure to rug up.
bolivr
Bring your own cigars. As far as I know there are no vendors down there ( happy to be corrected). I like it though for the local whisky and had a fun weekend fly fishing

JackFNQ
Best time imo is autumn to see change in leaves, and makes scenery of colonial era pretty. Driving is good, West tamar sea horses, depending on season pickyo cherries rasperries blueberries... Daffodil season at some heritage listed homesteads. Don river railway steam train Devonport, Salamanca market Sat, Atlantic salmon fishing on fishfarm, though may not be allowed now, just trout. I thought there was a tobacco growing area/display near an old trout farm near Hobart from memory, but surely too cold??? AFL is played down there certain dates in season. Deloraine annual craft market, Nov I think. Bakeries in the old towns such as evandale and wkend market there - pennyfarthing races. www.evandalevillagefair.com Cheap great eats Launceston - lamb souvlaki, and pasta resistence. Personally for a winter holiday from Darwin I'd be going to NZ. Tas is not regarded as a great skiing destination.
Fuzz
If you're in Launceston, just don't confuse the new Woolies/SIW distribution centre for the airport, like one old fella did when it first opened. Staff were a little surprised when he was found wandering in a stairwell, trying to find the arrival hall!
AndrewNR
Only ever heard good things about the place. Would love to go there or perhaps retire there eventually. Apparently its gun and motorcycle country. Largest legal farm of poppies I heard once too..

Staff were a little surprised when he was found wandering in a stairwell, trying to find the arrival hall! fuzz, if you think that is bad, a while back the tassie shield cricket side signed up a young kid from pakistan for a season. bit pissed when he did not arrive as scheduled. they waited to hear. nothing. meanwhile, the poor kid is sitting at the airport in tanzania, waiting to be collected, knowing no one and no money. was finally tracked down. tasmania/tanzania. easy mistake, though tassie is a bit more third world and has their famous two-headed people. personally, i think that the stories of incest are exaggerated. a mate in prosecutions told me that the incest capital of australia is gympie. no big surprise.
