Rushman Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 who else (besides Skyfall and his bloody Baylor Bears) loves College Football? My Aggies started off well. Who else follows college ball?
ShortFatHokie Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 <raises hand> Afraid my Hokies are going to get their "i"s dotted in Columbus this weekend...be gentle Buckeyes, most of them are only freshmen... 1

ShortFatHokie Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Season tickets, Sic'em Bears! Loved watching Baylor maul West Virginia last year! LOL!
Tino Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Being in the UK I find the scale of college sport in the US incredible. Seems such a great system across multiple sports. For fans of football/soccer in the EPL, could you imagine Wayne Rooney et al having to study history of art for three years on a sports scholarship at Oxford?!

To be fair, the bigger athletes who know they will be professionals in their sport and just attending the college because they have to. College football for the bigger schools is just a MASSIVE stream of revenue for the school and the kids other than a payed scholarship dont get much back in return...But thats a debate for another thread
Skyfall Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Loved watching Baylor maul West Virginia last year! LOL! They are definitely a fun and exciting team to watch!!!! And now we have the best , newest, nicest, most advanced stadium in all of College Sports! 1
scottm12 Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Go Huskers, not a lot of Pro teams growing up the state of Nebraska, so where ever we go. Go Big Red.
CigarAsh Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 They are definitely a fun and exciting team to watch!!!! And now we have the best , newest, nicest, most advanced stadium in all of College Sports! A bridge over the river to get to walk to the stadium? How cool is that! I really like what Baylor has been doing in the Big 12 the past several years. Big upgrades in everything. Alas, my beloved Jayhawks will assume their traditional football position as conference doormat upon which others can wipe their feet. All I have to say about football season is, it's just an interlude until Jayhawk Basketball starts up again! Rock Chalk!
AlastairE Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 Can anyone explain the multiple Conferences (and how/why particular colleges play in them) to me....?
CigarAsh Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Can anyone explain the multiple Conferences (and how/why particular colleges play in them) to me....? The conferences used to be very much regional. Lots of rivalries between colleges in the same state or neighboring states. That's what really powered college sports originally, these types of "local" rivalries. The rivalry between my favorite team, the university of Kansas was always a huge rival with a border state, Missouri. That rivalry goes all the way back to the US civil war. Teams play the majority of their games against other teams in their conference with the hope of making it into bowl games or tournaments depending on the sport. In the last 5 or 10 years it's all changed driven by the TV revenue from college football. Smaller conferences have disappeared or merged to form maybe 5 "power" conferences with the biggest schools and the biggest athletic budget. The smaller schools and conferences still maintain the old look but they're being squeezed by the new economics. The bigger schools are spending over $100 million a year on their athletic budgets and building bigger and better stadiums, all driven by the TV dollars and the popularity of football and to a lesser degree, basketball. It's a trend I don't like at all because it's disturbing the old regional rivalries. I know Aussies are sports crazy like Americans, but the university sports system is huge and serves as kind of a minor league for the professional sports. My oldest son graduated from Kansas State last year and made it a point to be back there for the first game of the season last week. It's really big and driven by your school and local loyalties.

The class load for a big time NCAA athlete (not all) but most looks like this.. First Class...TV/VCR repair 2nd class...Aids Awareness(Andy Katezenmoyer flunked this class while at OSU) 3rd class...Gym Anyway born and raised a Buckeye fan and hater of that team up North.. OSU could go 1-10 but if that one win is against that team up North it's a successful season. 2
forgop Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Used to love it and breathe it. Followed premium message boards to always follow up on recruits and everything else going on that most ordinary people never even knew. Unfortunately after a Rose Bowl appearance, our head coach pretty much mailed it in as well as losing much of our top staff as we were about the rock bottom in the conference for pay. Then said coach criticized the fans for having "expectations", but much of the fan base wasn't seeing through the smoke and mirrors as long as they were still going to crappy bowl games. We went several years without beating anyone in the top 25, let alone a winning record. I felt he should have retired or fired around 2004, but he was allowed to stay and then pick his succcessor because he was a "legend" for said alma mater. The next head coach was a Div 1-AA coach, let alone someone who had head coaching experience. He was a complete joke and fired. They brought in a new coach last year and led us to a 1-10 record. I gave up buying tickets and being an athletic booster and quite frankly, won't step foot back until the AD is fired.
LLC Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 My favorite sport but being from Canada don't have a specific team but I follow a bunch of them.
stogieluver Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 Live and die with my Ole Miss Rebels. Bleed red and blue.
