I've seen a few BOTL tales recounting the horror of holidaying in various resorts and being unable find anything even resembling a halfway decent smoke. But this can be offset by taking a goodly selection with us .... or so I though.

My missus (God bless her) has been eying up the Cape Verde Islands. Now, they do look pretty, but from what I can find out there isn't a tobacconist to speak of, and worse there is a restriction on the amount of cigars/tobacco you're allowed to bring onto the Island with you.

Has anyone been there, or know of similar places that are cigar desert destinations?

Australia would be high on the list!

Yeah, Australia. Returning I had 150g chewing tobacco for a friend, A trini Reyes 5 pack because id heard enough to think worth a try and some horrible flavoured italian cigars. I was allowed to keep 3 trini reyes and the 4 flavoured cigars because the pack was open. Customs officer thought they'd done me a great service and had i opted to keep them it would've costed me $270.

I love NYC and live about 2 hours away but as far as a cigar friendly place to visit, NYC would be very low on the list. Try and light a cigar in Central Park while taking a stroll and get ready for a hefty fine in one of the "Park Police" see you. Your other option is to go into one of the Cigar Shoppes such as Nat Sherman. While absolutely stunning inside, the sticks cost more than double other local states because of the ridiculous taxes.

Mexico

With spots in Mexico City and Cancun, are you saying that Mexico is a bad spot to vacation re: Cigars? I would think that its OK.

I partially disagree with the DR statement if you stay specifically in the town of Las Terrenas. I found this local cigar producer called Puro Mundo and the store was beautiful. The inside of the was rustic with character, and loaded with empty cedar boxes waiting to be filled; tobacco drying out front and inside. They had one large walk-in humi with a great selection, including three shelves dedicated to their blend which was either Mild, Med. or Full. There were only a couple rolling tables probably employing a few rollers at most. That being said, i found nothing else near as special as this place and if i hadn't researched it to find it then i would have been in cigar hell lol smoking (probably fake) Don Diegos from the resort hotel humidor lol

Huatulco, Mexico..........no local puros to find and glass tops only spotted once. Kind of disappointing to go on a vaca and not have any spots to sniff out some cigars..cuban or not...perusing humidors is part of the fun.

The name is Puro Mundo, the guy is french and the cigars are terrible, unless you like the green and vegetal taste of the olor dominicano leaves…

Syria wasn't always the cigar vacation spot that it is today. I was there a year or two before the current troubles and picked this Punch up at this bizarre Duty Free on the Jordanian border.post-9032-0-17145500-1400434549_thumb.jp

Damn! Have not been up to NYC in a bit but going up there this summer for a few weeks. Was hoping to stroll the park and smoke a few cigars. That is crazy that they fine you now. There was always a ton of people smoking pot back in the day and they did not hassle them.

Atlantis in the Bahamas is pretty bad. Tons of fakes in the small towns surrounding and the cigar shop in Atlantis the prices are ridiculous. Around Freeport area found a few cigar bar typed places and was paying 50 bucks a cohiba or monte 2 a few years back as I did not bring any sticks thinking that I was going to find CC's everywhere and for cheap. Boy was I wrong.

To each their own. I for one would say relative o whatever else was around, it was a nice place :) and a wonderful experience.

San Francisco - lovely tourist spot, but the attitude is almost as bad as NYC, light up and if the cops don't harass you, the other tourists and locals will shame you into submission. Bleah. And just try to find something islandish to smoke there? Fuggedaboudit!

Not to mention the Customs police at the airport - it's one of 2 places I've been (the other being NYC) where they actually x-ray your bags coming INTO the country for contriband... horrible.

Anywhere cold, miserable and lacking indoor venues that are cigar friendly. Chicago in the winter comes to mind: was there recently, and had to go up 26 floors to have a cigar on the windy patio of the rooftop bar atop the Dana Hotel. Vancouver is also particularly hostile to cigars or so I've been told by some friends.

I noticed that North Korea, Iraq, and a few other less than developed places have been mentioned here. Frankly, if you don't mind the constant surveillance (e.g. North Korea) or security risks (e.g. Iraq), these are some of the most cigar friendly countries in the world. You can smoke anywhere you please.

The last time I went to the moon for a little getaway, I had horrible combustion and draw issues! Very uneven burns. Couldn't find a decent shop either!

Nice place to visit, but not alot in the way of atmosphere....

Lol. Yeah, I had a Groupon for a Seaside resort, but it was not as tranquil as it was advertised! Not going to get a favorable Yelp review.
