JY0 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 It has been an exciting morning at EZ Acres in the beautiful mountains of Western NC. I was sitting on the deck at 7:30AM enjoying the view and a cup of coffee. My wife was walking our walking my faithful Labrador, Buddy. I almost spilled my coffee when I heard what sounded like a shotgun blast. Buddy and the boss were walking up the road toward my next door neighbor's empty house. When the turned the corner buddy spotted a turkey about half way down the driveway. Buddy was perplexed. He wrinkled his forehead, sat down next to my wife and let out a tentative 'woof'. The startled, 25 pound turkey took flight as only a large turkey can, away from Buddy and towards the neighbors house. At this time of the morning the sun was rising and was directly behind the house. The results...dinner. The window was a pressurized double pane window. It took 3 of us an hour to cleans all the glass. After entering the house the turkey sailed through the bedroom and landed about 20 feet through the room, through the door and out into the hallway. I feel badly that he went this way, but his demise was instantaneous, and he is in the fridge.
Marker Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Buddy does good work. Give him a shotgun next time and this stuff wouldn't have to happen this way.
Loki Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Nice. I was driving down the road one day and startled one. It took flight and landed in the back of my pickup luckily not in the windshield.
canadianbeaver Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I always heard that Turkeys were stoopid... Maybe from Redd Foxx?
Rushman Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Damn. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631776,-87.070594
canadianbeaver Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Ok, so I was looking for a quote or video clip of Redd Foxx on Sandord and Son. Allying his son Lamont a turkey etc, when I found something even better. He really is one of the most hilarious comedians of all time : "Do you realize that if the pilgrims have been chasing bobcats instead of turkeys.. we'd all be eating ***** on Thanksgiving?!" -- Redd Foxx
ptrthgr8 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Awesome. That's a great story! I hope you don't have moose in your area. Cheers, ~ Greg ~
Hopperb Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Great story and pictures, also noticed you are in NC. I'm in the Lake Norman area just North of Charlotte.
CanuckSARTech Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Awesome. And Lisa, no, wild turkeys are quite smart and keen birds. Fairly hard to hunt, unless they're all crazy during their mating season. Trickier to hunt than deer, IMO. But, birds do have a tendency to fly at glass / reflections sometimes. Funny way to grab a nice specimen like that. Well done, for the dog! Man's best friend!
AverageJoe83 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 LMAO! I have had many grouse fly into my windows when I lived in the sticks but never a turkey.
FlyFishingDude Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Who needs a shotgun when when you have Buddy? Instant fast food...
JY0 Posted May 17, 2012 Author Posted May 17, 2012 I've been mostly unsuccessfully hunting turkeys for years. This boy has been around for a while based on his size and the length of his beard. The older they get the harder they are to hunt. In my opinion turkey is the most challenging hunt in north America. They are smart and have great eyes and ears....well, maybe not his guy Unlike most wildlife they can see colors. I made a stir fry with turkey breast, bok choy, fresh ginger, mushrooms, bean sprouts and vidalia onions. it was awesome. My wife selected the vegetarian option this evening as she had to help me get this boy out of the house. I told her not to name him! "Tom" is butchered, vacuum packed and is resting comfortably in the freezer. Buddy collected his vig. Good boy!
Geo17pip Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Thats nuts! Are you going to deep fry or smoke that bird?
Squarehead Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Awesome. That's a great story! I hope you don't have moose in your area. Cheers, ~ Greg ~ Moose don't fly very well,LOL
winelover Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Your dog is awesome. Also nice to see a pic of a wild turkey. The only turkeys we see in the UK are the extremely fat ones that are reared for Xmas. I am sure wild v fresh turkey tastes great. BTW If I understood correctly, the turkey flew into a neighbour's window? If so did you share any of the spoils with them. A case of your dog claiming the "shoot" but the bird falling on someone else's land? Also hope the repair bill isn't too high.

My neighbors moved out of state last year and we keep an eye on things for them. Wild Turkey tastes nothing like the turkey that you buy in the store. It is much leaner and 'cleaner' tasting. It's tricky to cook and dries out easily. Most folks I know don't eat the legs or wings. They are very tough from so much use. You can pressure cook the legs but they still remain tough to eat. I stir fry to keep it bite sized and moist. It is also good smoked with a low heat.

I feel like I could probably kill like 25 of them a year with my car. Flocks of 5-6 of them will just slowly wander their way across the road in front of me on a fairly regular basis. I have to stop and wait for them to get out of the way.
