last year i was fishing around nelson/murchison in north part of south island of new zealand. i stayed with my guide and we had a great trip. one really good fish of about 8 1/2 that took me a kilometre down stream before we got him made up for too many misses.

my guide does some work for a relatively new operation there run by one of the old hands - who split with his old place and set up on his own. has a heap of loyal clients. my guide was trying to convince me to come back and stay at this new small lodge about a month later, as they were having some good blokes coming in and there was a spot. only has about 3-4 huts. as is usual in these places, each night, it is communal dining - everyone around the same table - so the place gets quite close and everyone swaps stories. i remember at another place sitting next to an old dear who was telling me that she had enjoyed her trip but was looking forward to getting back to see her best friend, margaret, as she was not well - turned out to be margaret thatcher.

anyway, sadly, finances and other commitments simply would not allow me to get back for that time. i asked who it was that was coming in - guide looks at me and says 'batman'.

turns out it was michael keaton - i had seen him on letterman telling stories about bone fishing so i knew he was keen. he was coming in with a good mate of his, jack nicklaus. imagine sharing the dinner table for a week with those guys and listening to the stories. i was considering selling a kidney to get there but mine might be a bit too used.

I certianly wouldnt give away a kidney for Micheal Keaton ( is he even an actor anymore?) But for a few moments from the Golden Bear, I would perform the surgery myself.

The only draw back would be the fact you couldn't smoke a fine Cuban whilst listening to their stories. Although would Keaton and Nicklaus be permited to consume second hand CC smoke by Washington?
