Popular Post Rushman Posted April 2, 2012 Popular Post Posted April 2, 2012 So after almost a week absent from the forum, I am back to tell a story that non-cigar smokers just wouldnt understand. So my store in PDC is very much an in-and-out thing. Yes we have two chairs outside, but thats normally for my wife and I. Rarely does a customer sit and enjoy a smoke with me, outside of the several BOTL's from FOH that have come down for a visit. A week ago Sunday, a gentleman walked into my store, and was eyeing the merchandise with a skeptcal eye. When he finally picked from some recomendations I made (I think Epi 2), I asked him if he needed matches, and he replied "Im gonna sit and smoke with you". That night, I was alone at the store, so I was like "cool". 8 cigars (4 each) and countless mojitos and cervezas later, we were fast friends. I learned he was down for two weeks with his family from Chicago, and that he was a native of Montenegro in the former Yugoslavia. I cant think of any other "hobby" if you will where two perfect strangers from completely two different walks of life could become fast friends in such a short time. Monday evening, he came back - more of the same - way too many cigars and drinks, alot of solving of the worlds problems. After more of the same on Tuesday night, he left and said "see ya tomorrow". And so it went, all week long...... I enjoyed myself more than I have in quite some time. We kept the store open much later than normal, our wives got to know each other, we fell in love with his kids, what a time. As much fun as I was having, I have to admit there were a few days when I had to go open the store (if you recall from a prior post we had to fire our employee) after getting to bed drunk at 3:00 am I was mentally calculating just how many days he had left in his vacation. Last night was our last night, in total he smoked 7 cigars yesterday - It was a light day for me, only 3, but two were double coronas. Neverthele, we finished it in style. We had a blast, and are already planning next year. The cigar community is by and large the friendliest, most generous, knowledgeable and enjoyable people on this earth. Thanks for listening. 17
Colt45 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Beautiful! Perhaps cigars brought you together, but I think it's the people that make it stick.......
Hohenthal Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Beautiful! Perhaps cigars brought you together, but I think it's the people that make it stick....... Couldn't say it better! Great story!
melies Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Now I regret more than ever that when I was in PDC (January) i couldn't visit you Rushman, the wife just kept taking me to events with people maybe next year or in the summer...
Marker Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I agree wholeheartedly. This is also why I wonder how some cigar forums have such heated and snippy debates. If you were smoking a cigar in person with that individual, that would never happen. How can you get ticked off smoking a cigar? It is a great thing.
Puros Y Vino Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Great story. I agree 100% Some of the most cordial & supportive people I've met is through this hobby.

Squarehead Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 What a great time. You can't beat the camaderie of cigar smokers.I haven't had one bad expierience yet.
CanuckSARTech Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Very cool. But nope, it's not universal - I'm a jerk to all I meet.
MIKA27 Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 This is indeed a very unique hobby of ours and you are 100% correct Rushman, others outside of BOTL can never understand. I for one have met so many great, generous, interesting people by sharing a cigar or two, one more so being Steve (OzCuban), whom I call a great friend. It is purely via this forum I got the chance to meet him and whilst he does live in another state, we often do catch up in person when he visits down this way in Melbourne VIC with his lovely wife Lucinda. Steve and I chill out, drink and enjoy our cigars and each others company whilst our wives talk about shopping! Perfect! another good friend is Mike (Bolivr). It's really funny when people outside of this BOTL circle ask "How did you meet Steve?" and you tell them via a forum on the computer. Instantly they think the worst and its a shame, because there are many people who are just like yourself, who are decent, down to earth people. We live in a technological age where one does not limit meeting people whilst having a stroll down the road but now moreso via a forum, you catch up at a cigar meet and something just feels right. I think we are unique because we share a simple converstaion whilst enjoying a ciagar and drink. There's no better way to relax and be yourself which in turn means you are judged by the other person on your 'real' personality. Your post is but one perfect example of this. All the best.
Loki Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Very cool. The only other people that I feel the same comraderie with other than BOTLs are Harley owners, real riders not the posers. Riding and cigars for a lunch break or waterhole break are the usual.
Chaki Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Great story, thanks for sharing. Just out of curiosity, where is "PDC"?
maverickdrinker Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 my wife always teases me by asking which of my internet boyfriends am i going to smoke with and from which board? LOL
SurpriseMVP Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Great story and so true. Some of the best friends I've made have been through a forum. Now have friends all over that if I'm traveling will take time to meet me for a smoke and some good conversation
Tarks Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 What a great story. Thanks for sharing. There truly is no other hobby that brings brothers together like our hobby.
Rushman Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 After an exhausting but great week, Mike (madandana) is down here on vacation with his family and we had a chance to enjoy some cigars and cerveza together. Thanks Mike! Next week my great friend and non FOH But big BOTL Lincoln is down from LA for a week, then I'm off to Texas for a little work, lotta play and hopefully some smokes with David (brazoseagle or as many know him the meat god) in Big D. Gotta love it. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.630170,-87.069779
