I received a cab of '03 HDM Des Dieux fro a very reliable source known to many members of FOH.

It is the third 50 cab purchased, and shared with cigar cronies. One of those cronies is so skeptical CCs from any source, he rarely enjoys them for fear he's being duped.

As proof this time, my crony pointed out that the box, from De. 03, is extremely lighter than the others, from June 03 -- wrapper and filler (at the foot).

I must admit, the shades are very, very different. Yes. They taste good, but need some rest since they just arrived.

So, my crony says, "I think these are fakes, or not from '03. They're way lighter than the others." When I told him that I understand that's not a sign of diddly-squat, he said, "why don't you ask your blogging buddies. I've never seen anything like it."

I took "blogging buddies" to mean you guys.

So, are any of you familiar with the phenomenon?

Sorry I don't have pictures, but I'm not sure it's necessary. Take my word for it though, the Dec 03s are many shades lighter and other than size look like an entirely different cigar.

It's my understanding that once the cigars are rolled they are compiled at the sorting table, from there its someones job to match the color within each box. However the sorting table may have several hundred cigars needing to be color sorted. WIthin those hundreds of cigars you will have outliers from the standard shade. If you take a sorting table with 600 cigars of 03 Des Dieux's those 12 cabs are going to most certainly have very different wrapper shades from one cab to the next. Should the same cigar have such varying wrappers? I personally think that the very lightest wrappers should be scrapped as well as the very darkest however thats 6th on my list of beefs with HSA.

Cigars are sorted and boxed by shade.

Each individual box should contain cigars of the same shade.... there is no relationship beyond that. Each box can be different to the next... even if from the same year.

I have boxes that are at totally different ends of the shade spectrum (64 different shades I believe) and they are from the same factory, from the same month!

With all due respect, but I'd be refraining from sharing your cigars with this particular buddy.

...Just as above. Dont even bother with the blockhead. He's basically implying that you don't know what your doing.

I have had 4 cabs of the 03 Des Dieux and they have all had differing colors to their wrappers. One was very greenish and I was disappointed in how they tasted. The other three all were a rich brown, but one was lighter than the previous box and so on. I had one friend on here try the lighter and the darker and he preferred the lighter. I, on the other had, preferred the darker ones. All in taste and expectation I think.

Being that they are an organic product, it makes sense that they will not be identical in their appearance. I do not believe that the wrapper has that much influence on the overall flavor of the cigar- though it is nice to see rich, dark wrappers.

To add, the PE/HQ/PSP program is to large extent based on box distinctions: aroma, construction, oils, and color. How many times have we all drooled over a particularly dark looking box featured on the LFTH? As for preference? I have two boxes of Dip 4s, both good, but I prefer the lighter shade smokes between the two. As others have pointed out, cigars are boxed by shade. What would really send red flags flying for me is if there were marked differences between the shades of individual cigars in a single box...

I know where you got them and there is nothing shady about them. First off , the June boxes were widely known as the best of the best. The best of the decade. In fact the box Ken had that he raved about on video was a June box. The shade means nothing, especially since you are comparing your measurement to the absolute cream of the crop.

" send me a couple and I'll give you a more detailed opinion!" - wink.

They are really good.

So there's no mistake, the color is completely uniform in each cab. The difference is between boxes, not within the box.

So interesting about dividing the lot of cigars by wrapper colors. Would love be around for any leftovers.

As others have said, this is perfectly normal and ok.

This is a confidence problem! I say this with candor and no intent to offend.

We have two people. One person smokes Habanos and knows some but admittedly not a lot about them. Another knows admittedly nothing about them and is afraid of them. The guy who knows nothing is trying to tell that guy who knows something that there is something wrong with his cigars.

Does anyone else see the problem here?

Mate, if you originated this question yourself I could understand it. Going to a reliable source for information, take this forum for example, is understandable. However, seeking answers from someone who admits to being paranoid and ignorant is kindofa' mind"___" (fill in the blank here) of your own making. Don't you think?

I know plenty of people who would be pleased as punch to find a lightly wrapped cigar in a 50 cab such as you have. I am one such person. Trust your own tastes amigo and forget the local gurus. Secondly, bring your questions to those who know something about the subject matter if you have them. Most here will be happy to mentor a fellow traveler. Few if any will waste their time attempting to convert ignorant skeptics!

Tomorrow question the provenance of his Macanudo, just to mess with his mind a bit!!! Tell him that the wrapper on his cigar is rolled in the wrong helix for a Macanudo and see what he says to that one! -LOL

Ray,

I have heard great anecdotal accounts of your posts. From my personal view (being new here), your observations are, by far, my favorite.

Please continue providing your vision and insight! I just love it!

Cheers!
