Lest everything thinks I'm a high roller, this magnificent cigar was gifted to me by a very generous brother. That said, it was very hard to go into this review "blind" because of all the hype. Here's the good news: this cigar immediately distracts you from the hype by being so damned good.

It is an absolute vision to hold. I've never seen a wrapper like it - luminescent, just glowing with oils, and a deep, dark red wrapper you could almost eat. It felt great and smelled of pungent, sweet manure.

The 1966 opened with a smoothness and sweetness that exceeded any other cigar I've smoked. Also present was the classic cohiba grassiness, but with additional hints of caramel and licorice.

At the end of the first third, it was bursting with richness and creamy caramel sweetness, and background flavours of grilled meat and fresh croissants.

About half way through, these all built to more developed flavours of fresh baked bread and grilled chorizo, leather, cedar and classic Cuban roasted nuts, and that sweet creaminess that even included a bit of smoked provolone. The cigar was still remarkably smooth, but was building in power. More on that later.

In the final third, I kept being reminded of Vietnamese cuisine, specifically sweet, chili grilled chicken. The smooth creaminess developed a strong fruity character, while the sweet toasted leather was even fuller.

Total smoking time of this 94 cigar was 1:45. And the $64,000 question (almost): would I buy a box? No. I am not a big fan of Cohiba and while this cigar is by far the best Cohiba I've ever had, it is still not a profile I want to dish out such huge dollars for. I can appreciate the sophistication of Cohibas, but they never surprise me. I dare say I find them a bit boring. The 1966 is certainly not boring, and I'd love to have more around, but at the cost, there are simply many more cigars out there (many of them regular production) that I enjoy even more.

P.S. This beast was a bit much for me in the early afternoon after a light lunch. Had to lie down a while.

The Swamp is down for the season! This was my first outdoor celebration.

Very nice review my friend and what a glorious way to spend an afternoon. I haven't had a 1966 yet, but I'm looking forward to having one real soon.

I actually didn't figure out last night was happening... until last night :(

And thanks for the note, this review was actually my demo to be a hand model.

fresh croissants. definitely agree with you there. this cigar is very close to the genios in my opinion, but a bit gentler.

Had a 1966 today afternoon - my first. Mainly woody, leathery, spicy, pepper, with a bit of caramel after the halfway mark. Got earthy( in an unpleasant way) towards the end. Was ok, but definitely not a great experience. Seems similar to Bundwallah's experience. The body was medium, never really took off - left me high & dry :D Hope more ppl have experience similar to Don Pedro's :)
