The only "real special" cigar I have is a lone Davidoff Special T from the box I was giving away at my now 13 year old son's birth. I figure I'll smoke it at his wedding or graduation. Other than that I have a limited few Cohiba Sig VI's from the original release that I'm reserving for my annual birthday smokes.

Honestly, not really. On any given day I'm as likely to grab a montecristo No.4 as I am an Upmann Sir Winston. As a matter of fact, the friend

scenario has come into play a few times, with Montecristo 4s being smoked. Other times, SLR Serie A, Hoyo Churchills.... The cigar was basically

irrelevent - an incidental part of the meetings.

Members make good points, and suggest other questions (for me): If you are saving what you consider best for the rare occasion, what are you smoking

in the meantime? Just OK cigars? I'm looking for a great cigar every time I light up. What happens if the cigars you've saved are mediocre or worse?

I hope I don't come off as preachy or melodramatic as that's not what I have in mind - this is just how I look at it.

I agree with most, but I think that I also consider the cost which makes it more rare. I always look for a good to great experience. I will smoke a bhk less because although I think to be a great cigar every time so far I only have a few and can't afford to buy a bunch. More regularly I will smoke good cigars - d4, QDO, ryj caz etc.

So by default great and expensive and rare cigars have the most chance to be saved for an occasion. That said an occassion could be something mundane or unexciting... Like having some time to myself...

Good question... The CGR's I put aside for the occasion might turn out to be a disaster (and frankly I wouldn't be surprised if so). Still they mark a moment in my life when I was completely over the moon and that's the added 'value', plain sentiment. If the CGR's are duds, well I would go out of my way to show her a cigar can be something great and wonderful and that cigar would come from a box I think is great and wonderful that specific day

Normally, like you, I grab whatever I want to smoke.

I don't really have cigars for special occasions, but more cigars for which I make a special moment when smoking them. For example, some cigars I have just when I do homework or watch a show or movie and for some I shut down the complete outside world and just concentrate on the smoke. I've been surprised by unassuming cigars and disappointed by possible legendary smokes. I have cigars I know will give me exactly what I suspect they'll give me and cigars that are complete wild cards before lighting up.

Having said that, some rare and unavailable cigars require more special occasions than those that come in completely filled boxes.

Yesterday was for me a day to acknowledge, maybe even celebrate.

I took with me a Sir Winston from '03, a SLR Pacificos, and a Por Larrañaga Magnificos. When it came time to choose, I picked the Pacificos to light up.

Honestly? It was a little disappointing.

The good thing is that I decided to celebrate the same day again tomorrow just for the hell of it and maybe again sometime next week.

With all that, I think there's something to what Ross and Guy are saying.

I don't currently have any special occasion cigars but I hope to acquire a box of Sir Winston's by years end. I think I will reserve them for those moments that I deem special and the vitola is right in line with what I would want to enjoy on that day.

Every day is a special occasion with an H. Upmann Mag 46

But when I'm celebrating something, I reach for a Padron 45th/46th, a Casa Fuente or an aged Opus X. I also have some Cohiba Siglo VIs from '03 and '04 that I save for special occasions, but that's a morning-only smoke for me.
