CohibaBehike Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 So I just got a new apartment yesterday and made an office/smoking room in one of the side rooms. I sealed the door, there are no vents in the room, and I bought a Lightning Air unit for the room http://www.lightningair.com/ I run the fan system while I smoke, however, I do not run the ozone while I am in the room (it can give you cataracts apparently). But I am wondering if the Ozone is alright to run with my Desktops in the room. I have a wine cooler, but being that it is sealed I'm not worried about it. But will that ozone affect my cigars in any way, or leak into my desktops? The smell can be very "bitey" and I'm just not 100% sure that the desktops are fine in the room. Does anyone have any insight or use the system and have it seem that it's fine?
CohibaBehike Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 After taking the day to think about it and look around on the Internet I really couldn't come to a solid answer, however, I just moved the desktops out of the smoking room and unless I get a solid answer I'll just keep them out for now. So if anyone knows that would be great, but I guess I came to a unsolid answer. Thanks for looking! I'll post if I can ever figure it out!
Maron76 Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Do you have a good humidor that seals properly? Since you smoke cigars in the same room as it I am guessing that it must. I think you would notice if cigar smoke was getting into the humidor, the sticks would probally start to taste rancid after a while. I think you are fine, no worries mate.
purosdave Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Ozone deodorizes through a chemical oxidation process. I would say long exposure to high levels would be a very bad idea, but if you only run the unit for a few hours at a time, infrequently I wouldn't worry about it. If you run it often enough that you notice other things in the room oxidizing prematurely (metals, leather, etc) then I would move the cigars.
jjp4 Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I've been in the market for a new air purifier lately, so I've done my homework. I think what you purchased is a well-known ozone emitter that might even be dangerous over the long term. Have a look at: http://www.air-purifier-power.com/ecoquest-fresh-living.html. If you scroll way down, your unit (according to the manufacturer's website) looks like a slightly updated model of the bottom pic. Even though you don't smoke in the room with it, the purifier could "contaminate" your entire apartment. Worst case scenario means that you can't run the unit when you're home. I don't know if you have enough ozone to worry, but U.S. OSHA regs state that workers are allowed to be exposed to only 0.1ppm per workday, which isn't much at all.
