Cohibas vs Everything Else

As I have said in my intro, I am a CC newbi. A few nagging questions I have after looking at numerous CC e-commerce and reading some threads are about tge Cohiba brand.

Are they really so special?

What makes them so special?

Why are they so much more money than the other CC's?

Are they worth the price difference?

Should I as a CC newbi, be trying other brands first?

Finally what is the best affordable Cohiba?

As a side note. I have so far had two Cohiba Siglo 1's and have loved em.

In the sense of them being the end all be all of cigars... no. In my experience the Cohiba lines have been more consistantly smoking better than any other line.

I don't know. The taste is unique and depends on the line (1492 vs siglo etc)

I think its due to name recognition and the choice tobacco used and aging techniques in making them.

If they weren't no one would be buying them. I have a few boxes sitting in my humidor that I treat as desert cigars. I love them but only smoke them sparingly due to the cost.

I think so. Not so much as trying other brands but also other sizes. I'm a proponent of smaller ring gauged cigars which I only was able to choose upon after trying cigars of all sizes and settling on those. You'll notice differences in sizes within the same line. Just last night a friend was smoking a punch double corona and noted that it was much milder than the smaller punch. I agree completely with that. The petite coronas and even the punch punch offer much fuller tasting smokes. So its all about tastes and experimenting. This means buy samples of everything!

For the money the Siglo line is great. IIs are always a winner and I finally broke into my Siglo IV box this morning and was wowed by them. For the 1492 line there really isn't anything better than the corona especiales. Of course like I've said I'm biased to smaller gauges.

I can't agree more. Get your hands on a sampler and try different sizes and find 'your' flavour.

In the end, it's all fairly subjective. You owe it to yourself to try a variety of the line and see which,

if any, strike your fancy. But I think that if you are expecting an ethereal experience each and

every time, you may be setting yourself up for a let down.

For me, the value aspect is especially subjective. Let's say you try a number of different cigars

from different lines over a period of time, and determine that the flavor profile you enjoy the most

is Hoyo de Monterrey. You've tried properly rolled and nicely matured examples of HdM and Cohiba.

You enjoy the latter, but love the former. Is the Cohiba worth the premium over the HdM?

Cohiba and RA are definitely my favorite marcas. These two are at very different price points and are two very different flavor profiles.

Do I feel they are worth the price? Thats a definite yes for me and I'll tell you why. I only smoke 2-3 cigars a week and generally after a good meal. I want each and every cigar I smoke to be a great experience so the cost takes a back seat to consistency. If I smoked 3 cigars a day then my attitude would likely be different.

I am currently waiting for my first large ( at least large for me ) order of CC's.

On the subject Cohibas yea they are great, but almost every cigar has something great.

At the end of the day, you are the only person who can truly answer any of the questions you asked. My best advice for you is to plan on having a long journey in which you try as many of the different Cuban cigars as possible. I know that sounds like an awful task, but I'm sure you can force yourself to tackle it! :-P

Boris, I am going to try and give you my perspective upon your questions. As you have stated, you are new to Cuban cigars and want to know more about Cohiba's as well as other marcas.

Cohiba's are considered by many cigar smokers as a special cigar. They can display an elegant and vibrant smoothness of body on the palate while coating the mouth with a velvetity rich espresso and mocha essence coupled with vanilla bean and a resounding honey flavor.

The balance and unique flavor seperates this marca from all others with the refined subtle flavor and spice.

Because they are worth it some will say.

Different strokes for different folks, yet a properly aged Cohiba Linea or a Siglo cigar makes my mouth water. I treat myself with a Cohiba.

I recently replied to another Cuban cigar newbie with this reply about what to try and in my opinion, as you are learning about cigars in general and about Cuban cigars, don't you deserve to sample all different shapes and sizes to find out what you may like or not? Read this reply and consider ordering a few samplers of different marcas and sizes to explore the flavors of Cuban cigars.

As to a sampler, you have been given some excellent advise from some members here. I typically suggest that you purchase 3 of each and let me explain why. Say after speaking with Lisa or Rob you decide upon a couple of Petit Coronas, a couple of Robustos, a couple of Campanas or Pyrimades, a couple of Minutos, and a couple of du Connaisseur sized cigars. This will give you 10 different cigars in a good mix of different sizes to sample.

Once you receive your sampler, all the cigars need to wait AT LEAST 30 DAYS before SMOKING, this is a valuable rule to follow for the rest of your cigar smoking life! The longer they rest, the better they will taste and smoke.

I suggest that you purchase 3 of each cigar that you choose. That way you will have 30 Habanos to sample after the 30 days rest. I also suggest that you get a small notebook and take notes about the cigars as you smoke them, what you like as well as what you do not enjoy, that way you will begin to determine what you your palate enjoys and can describe your likes to others for future suggestions. As you smoke one of the 3 cigars, you will find that you either like it or may want to try it or something close to it again. You have the 2nd cigar to smoke and the 3rd one to have while you are waiting for your next order to arrive or to share with a cigar buddy while you are smoking the 2nd one.

Here is my suggestion as to what to order for your first sampler, followed by the second sampler to be ordered 2 weeks after the first. That way, the second order is already resting longer than the 30 days when you finish smoking the 1st sampler!

Tampa can I suggest that in the future all suggested sampler pack contain only 3 cigars.

You have offered a fine selection of cigars there to get the full picture and flavour profiles of Cuban cigars but you are missing one important aspect.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO PICK THEM OUT OF THE BOXES AND PACKAGE THEM UP, I HAVE TO!!!!
